Coming to America (Der Prinz aus Zamunda)

Im Film reisen Prinz Akeem und Semmi nach Queens, um eine Queen für den Prinzen von Zamunda zu finden. Das Apartment befindet sich aber in Williamsburg, Brooklyn1. Abgesehen von der Farbe und der Tatsache, dass der Barber Shop nur für den Film dort war, hat sich die Gegend nur wenig verändert.

Den Burgerladen gibt es nicht mehr und das Waldorf Astoria2 habe ich vergessen.

Night Court (Harry’s wundersames Strafgericht)

Night Court war eine Sitcom, die von 1984 bis 1992 lief und in Deutschland unter dem Namen „Harry’s wundersames Strafgericht“ lief. Die Show hat einen 80er-Charm, den ich heute mehr zu schätzen weiß, denn je.

In der Sitcom ist Harry ein Richter am Municipal Court (Gericht einer größeren Stadt). Für die Außenansicht diente jedoch das New York County Supreme Court3.

In der Show ist der Gerichtssaal im 14th Floor. So viele Etagen hat das Gebäude nicht. Das US Court House daneben schafft es. Da wurde also kreativ gearbeitet. Und ich muss zugeben, das Supreme Court hat die hübschere Front.

Das Intro von Night Court hat mein Bild vom New York der 80er geprägt: gritty, dreckig, Grafitti, Dampf vom Fernwärmenetz. Was ich bei meinem Besuch vorgefunden habe, ist ein Post-Guilliani-New-York: vergleichsweise sauber und aufgeräumt, für Touristen sicher (außer Bronx vielleicht).

Seinfeld

In Seinfeld, eine Sitcom aus den 1990ern, sitzen Jerry Seinfeld und seine Truppe immer wieder im Tom’s Restaurant4. Der Ort exisitiert und wurde nicht nur für Außenaufnahmen benutzt. Auch die Innenaufnahmen wurden vor Ort gedreht.

Das Innere hat sich nicht verändert, Tische, Bestuhlung und selbst die Lampen sind unverändert. OK, die Polsterung ist neu.

Hinweis: Es gibt ein Tom’s Restaurant in Brooklyn. Das hat aber mit Seinfeld nichts zu tun. Aber nur ein paar Meter entfernt vom Diner ist der einzige Laden für Brauereizubehör in New York. Fragt nicht, wieso ich das weiß.

Friends

Die Außenansicht der Friends Apartments sind nach meinen Nachforschungen in nur einer Episode zu sehen. Und ich glaube, es wurde nie erwähnt in welcher Stadt die Sitcom spielt. Das Gebäude steht im New Yorker West Village5 in einer Parallelstraße zur berühmten Christopher Street.

Die Hard with a Vengance (Stirb langsam: Jetzt erst recht)

Einen großen Teil der Drehorte habe ich nicht gefunden. Ich hatte vergessen die Daten auszudrucken und daher in New York nicht zur Hand.

Ich war im Tompkins Square Park im East Village6. Dort spielt die Szene mit den Wasserkanistern. Den Brunnen selbst gibt es nicht. Der war Filmkulisse. Aber die Temperence Fountain ist echt.

Ich war auch in Washington Heights; die Szene mit dem N***-Schild wurde dort gedreht7. Beim Dreh war das Schild leer, aus Sicherheitsgründen, denn dies war ein schwarze Wohngegend und es hätte im schlimmsten Fall Krawalle ausgelöst. Im der Orignalversion des Films stand dort später wirklich das N-Wort. Das hat man später „politisch korrigiert“. Was unglücklich ist, da man jetzt nicht unbedingt versteht, warum Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) sind nervös und ungehalten reagiert. Man könnte meinen, dass er total überreagiert. Ohne das N-Wort ergibt nichts an dieser Szene einen Sinn.

Ich habe die Stelle gefunden, aber gute Fotos waren nicht möglich: Regen, Autoverkehr, parkende Autos und es ist bereits stark am Dämmern. Man sieht es dem Foto fast nicht an.

Madagascar

Und ja, da sind hunderte weitere Filme, die in New York spielen. Die Meisten haben Szenen an den weitbekannten Orten in New York wie Grand Central Station, Empire State Building, Times Square. Theoretisch könnte ich alle Fotos aus New York hier unter Film Locations einblenden. Ich musste irgendwo einen Schnitt machen.

Ja, ich habe die falsche Treppe fotografiert. Aber mal ehrlich, die sehen alle gleich aus und ich hatte keinen Ausdruck der Szene dabei. Man beachte auch die Details bei der Szene mit der Uhr: Die Deckenfenster stimmen und auch die Lampen. Und ich muss Marty (dem Zebra) recht geben. Grand Central Station ist groß und zentral.

Coming to America (Der Prinz aus Zamunda)

In the movie, Prince Akeem and Semmi travel to Queens to find a Queen for the Prince of Zamunda. However, the apartment is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn[sup]1[/sup]. Aside from the color and the fact that the barber store was only there for the movie, the area has changed very little.

The burger joint is no more and the Waldorf Astoria[sup]2[/sup]I forgot.

Night Court (Harry’s wundersames Strafgericht)

Night Court was a sitcom that ran from 1984 to 1992 and was known in Germany as “Harry’s wundersames Strafgericht”. The show has an 80s charm that I appreciate more today than ever.

In the sitcom, Harry is a judge at the Municipal Court (court of a larger city). For the exterior, however, the New York County Supreme Court[sup]3[/sup].

In the show, the courtroom is on the 14th Floor. The building doesn’t have that many floors. The US Court House next to it makes it. So they worked creatively. And I have to admit, the Supreme Court has the prettier front.

The intro to Night Court shaped my image of New York in the 80s: gritty, dirty, graffiti, steam from the district heating network. What I found during my visit was a post-Guilliani New York: comparatively clean and tidy, safe for tourists (except maybe the Bronx).

Seinfeld

In Seinfeld, a sitcom from the 1990s, Jerry Seinfeld and his troupe repeatedly sit in Tom’s Restaurant[sup]4[/sup]. The location exists and was not only used for exterior shots. The interior shots were also filmed on location.

The interior has not changed, tables, seating and even the lamps are unchanged. OK, the upholstery is new.

Note: There is a Tom’s Restaurant in Brooklyn. But it has nothing to do with Seinfeld. But just a few meters away from the diner is the only brewery supply store in New York. Don’t ask me how I know that.

Friends

According to my research, the exterior of the Friends apartments can only be seen in one episode. And I don’t think it was ever mentioned what city the sitcom is set in. The building is in New York’s West Village[sup]5[/sup] on a street parallel to the famous Christopher Street.

Die Hard with a Vengance (Stirb langsam: Jetzt erst recht)

I couldn’t find most of the filming locations. I had forgotten to print out the dates and therefore didn’t have them to hand in New York.

I was in Tompkins Square Park in the East Village[sup]6[/sup]. The scene with the water canisters takes place there. The fountain itself does not exist. It was a movie set. But the Temperance Fountain is real.

I was also in Washington Heights; the scene with the N*** sign was shot there[sup]7[/sup]. During filming, the sign was blank for security reasons, as this was a black residential neighborhood and it would have caused riots in the worst case. In the original version of the movie, the N-word was actually written there later. This was later “politically corrected”. Which is unfortunate, because you don’t necessarily understand why Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) reacts nervously and indignantly. You’d think he was totally overreacting. Without the N-word, nothing about this scene makes sense.

I found the spot, but good photos weren’t possible: rain, traffic, parked cars and it’s already dusk. You almost can’t tell from the photo.

Madagascar

And yes, there are hundreds of other films set in New York. Most of them have scenes at well-known locations in New York such as Grand Central Station, the Empire State Building and Times Square. Theoretically, I could show all the photos from New York here under Film Locations. I had to make a cut somewhere.

Yes, I photographed the wrong staircase. But let’s be honest, they all look the same and I didn’t have a print of the scene with me. Note the details in the scene with the clock: the ceiling windows are just right, as are the lamps. And I have to agree with Marty (the zebra). Grand Central Station is big and central.

Men In Black

Men in Black wurde nahzu überall in New York gedreht. Man braucht fast einen Tag, um alle Orte aufzusuchen. Deshalb habe ich die Jagd auf die drei Tage in New York verteilt. Und habe trotzdem nur die Hälfte geschafft.

Der Charakter J wird mit einer Verfolgungsjagd vorgestellt, die bei Grand Central Station8 startet und beim Guggenheim Museum9 endet. Theoretisch fährt der Zeitungstransporte, auf den J springt in die falsche Richtung. Das Viaduct ist südlich der Grand Central Station, das Guggenheim nördlich.

Die Brücke vom Viadukt wurde zwischenzeitlich restauriert und gestrichen. Auch die Hochhäuser im Hintergrund sind teilweise neu.

Der Pawn Shop von Jack Jeebs ist in der Lower East Side10. Sogar die rote Säule steht noch da.

Das MiB Headquarter habe ich gefunden, in dem ich einen Polizisten gefragt habe. Kein Witz. Es ist der Belüftungsgebäude11 für den Battery Tunnel, der Manhattan und Brooklyn verbindet. Die Tunnelröhren sind genau unter dem Gebäude, die Einfahrten auf der Rückseite.

Das Gespräch zwischen J und K findet im Battery Park statt, der genau auf der anderen Straßenseite ist. Ich habe vergessen die Bank zu Fotografieren, auf der die beiden sitzen, aber sie steht dort, denn man sieht „The Battery“ im Hintergrund.

Als K weggeht sieht man hinter ihm den Hudson River und Governors Island.

Men In Black II

Ein Ort, den ich auf meiner Liste hatte war das Empire Diner12. Der Ort kommt auch im dritten Teil vor. Ich war zwei Mal dort, hat mir echt gefallen. Innen wurde aber inzwischen umgebaut. Es sieht nicht mehr so wie im Film aus.

Das muss ich später ergänzen. Aber schon jetzt kann ich sagen, dass die Abschlussszene so etwas Movie Magic bemüht. In der Halle mit der oft gzeigten Uhr gibt es keine Schließfächer.

Ghostbusters

Im Film war das Gebäude eine ehemalige Feuerwehrwache. In Realität das Gebäude ist immer noch eine Feuerwehrwache13. Hook & Ladder 8 sind hier stationiert. Das Patch der Wache ist – natürlich – das Ghostbuster-Logo, das Motte ist „I’m afraid of no fire“.

Im Inneren haben sie für den Film viel geändert, könnte man meinen. Aber die Bilder täuschen, denn die Innenaufnahmen wurden gar nicht hier gedreht, sondern in Firestation 23 in Los Angeles. Umso erstaunlicher wie ähnlich sich die Wachen sind. Sogar der Holzschrank / Spind gibt es an beiden Orten.

Der Außenbereich vor dem HQ hat sich eigentlich nicht geändert. Die Häuser im Hintergrund dieser Szene stehen immer noch, haben nur ein andere Farbe bekommen. Aber die linke Seite der Straße ist neu.

Der Endgegner Gozer wird in der Upper West Side bekämpft, das ist Central Park West zwischen 65th und 66th Street. (Das ist dann nicht wirklich weit weg vom Apartment von Seinfeld und Cosmo.)

Der obere Bereich und die Höhe wurden im Film stark geändert, damit dort Platz ist für den finalen Kampf. Warum das Gebäude so extrem übehöht wurde kann ich nicht sagen. Es wirkt im Film stark übertrieben. Und das liegt nicht daran, dass der Film aus den 80ern ist. Alle Gebäude der Upper West Side standen damals schon. Sie sind aus dem Anfang des 20. Jahrhundert. Art Déco lässt Grüßen.

Der Eingang zum Gebäude ist unverändert. Aber als ich dort war (2023) war er eingerüstet. Ich bin gespannt, ob sie umbauen oder renovieren.

Ich muss gestehen. Ich dachte die Kirche ist Fake, aber sie existiert wirklich. Es ist die Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. In New York stehen überall einfach so Kirchen rum.

In einer Szene fährt Ecto-1 über die Williamsburg Bridge. Die Kamera filmt von der Brooklynseite und von nördlich der Brücke, damit die Skyline von Manhattan (Financial District) und die Brooklyn Bridge im Hintergrund sind. Mein Foto der Brücke stammt von der Brooklyn Bridge. (Btw. In meinem Foto sieht man unten den FDR auf seinem lilafarbenen Stelzen. Der FDR spielt eine Rolle in Die Hard III.)

Die nachfolgende Szene habe ich „rückwarts“ zugeordnet. Ich habe den Film noch Mal geschaut, nachdem ich in New York war. Und bei der Szene dachte ich: „Hmm. Das sieht fast so aus wie … Halt Stopp. Das ist Harry’s Strafgericht da im Hintergrund. Ich weiß wo das ist. Ich war da.“ Da ich das nicht geplant hatte, habe ich nur ein Foto aus der falschen Richtung.

Los fahren sie am Municipal Building14. Selbst die Ampel ist noch die gleiche. Von dort geht es dann am US Courthouse vorbei die Centre St runter in Richtung New York Supreme Court.

ENG

Men In Black

Men in Black was filmed almost everywhere in New York. It takes almost a day to visit all the locations. That’s why I spread the hunt over the three days in New York. And I still only managed half of it.

The character J is introduced with a chase that starts at Grand Central Station[sup]1[/sup] and ends at the Guggenheim Museum[sup]2[/sup]. Theoretically, the newspaper transportation that J jumps on is going the wrong way. The Viaduct is south of Grand Central Station, the Guggenheim is north.

The viaduct bridge has since been restored and painted. Some of the high-rise buildings in the background are also new.

Jack Jeebs Pawn Shop is in the Lower East Side[sup]3[/sup]. Even the red pillar is still there.

I found the MiB headquarters by asking a policeman. No joke. It’s the ventilation building[sup]4[/sup] for the Battery Tunnel, which connects Manhattan and Brooklyn. The tunnel tubes are right under the building, the entrances at the back.

The conversation between J and K takes place in Battery Park, which is just across the street. I forgot to take a photo of the bench they’re sitting on, but it’s there because you can see “The Battery” in the background.

As K walks away, you can see the Hudson River and Governors Island behind him.

Men In Black II

One place I had on my list was the Empire Diner[sup]5[/sup]. The place also appears in the third part. I’ve been there twice, really liked it. But the interior has since been remodeled. It no longer looks like it did in the movie.

I’ll have to add that later. But I can already say that the final scene is a bit of movie magic. There are no lockers in the hall with the clock that is often shown.

Ghostbusters

In the movie, the building was a former fire station. In reality the building is still a fire station[sup]6[/sup]. Hook & Ladder 8 are stationed here. The patch of the station is – of course – the Ghostbuster logo, the motto is “I’m afraid of no fire”.

You might think they changed a lot inside for the movie. But the pictures are deceptive, because the interior shots were not filmed here at all, but at Firestation 23 in Los Angeles. All the more astonishing how similar the guards are. Even the wooden cupboard/locker exists in both locations.

The outdoor area in front of the HQ hasn’t really changed. The houses in the background of this scene are still standing, they’ve just been given a different color. But the left side of the street is new.

The final boss Gozer is fought in the Upper West Side, which is Central Park West between 65th and 66th Street. (That’s not really far from Seinfeld and Cosmo’s apartment).

The upper area and the height were changed considerably in the movie to make room for the final battle. I can’t say why the building was made so extremely tall. It looks very exaggerated in the movie. And it’s not because the movie is from the 80s. All the buildings on the Upper West Side were already standing back then. They are from the beginning of the 20th century. Art Deco sends its regards.

The entrance to the building is unchanged. But when I was there (2023) it was covered in scaffolding. I’m curious to see if they’ll rebuild or renovate.

I have to confess. I thought the church was fake, but it really exists. It’s the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. There are churches just standing around everywhere in New York.

 

In one scene, Ecto-1 drives over the Williamsburg Bridge. The camera is filming from the Brooklyn side and from north of the bridge, so that the Manhattan skyline (Financial District) and the Brooklyn Bridge are in the background. My photo of the bridge is from the Brooklyn Bridge. (Btw. In my photo below you can see the FDR on its purple stilt. The FDR plays a role in Die Hard III).

I have assigned the following scene to “backwards”. I watched the movie again after I was in New York. And during the scene I thought: “Hmm. That almost looks like … Stop. That’s Harry’s Criminal Court in the background. I know where that is. I was there.” Since I hadn’t planned that, I only got a photo from the wrong direction.

They start at the Municipal Building[sup]7[/sup]. Even the traffic lights are the same. From there, walk past the US Courthouse down Centre St towards the New York Supreme Court.
