    • Tōhoku – grob alles nördlich von Tokyo, genauer: Fukushima.
    • Kantō – Tokyo und die Region um Tokyo herum
    • Tokyo – gehört zu Kanto, ist aber irgendwie ein eigener Planet
    • Chūbu – zwischen Kansai und Kanto; Hakone bis Nagoya;
      Ich habe die Region in Nord und Süd unterteilt, da die Liste der besuchten Orte lang ist und sich die Anreise signifikant unterscheidet.
    • Kansai – ist die Region um Kyoto und Oosaka
    • Chūgoku – der Bereich Honshus, der oberhalb von Shikoku liegt

How to split up Japan in a proper way? The 4 main islands are to cosrse; 47 prefectures are to fine. Luckily the Japanese subdivide the main island Honshu into 5 regions (plus Tokyo). Adding the other three island results in a good and practical breakdown of Japan. The website japan-guide is using the method. I follow their example.

  • Hokkaidō – the northern island with a lot of scenery
  • Honshu – the main island, that can be seperated into:
    • Tōhoku – This is the area north Tokyo, more exactly: Fukushima
    • Kantō – Tokyo and the area around Tokyo
    • Tokyo – is a part of Kanto, but somehow also it’s own planet
    • Chūbu – between Kanto and Kansai; Hakone to Nagoya;
      Ich have split the region into North and South, because there are lot of places on the list. And how to get there is significactly different.

    • Kansai – Kyoto and Oosaka and the area around
    • Chūgoku – the region of Honshu that is above Shikoku
  • Shikoku – the island below Chūbu
  • Kyūshū – the southern island
  • Okinawa – the japanese Hawaii far away of the 4 main islands

Historically Chubu is a part of Kansai. The border between Kanto and Kansai is located at the Hakone area. The former toll station can be visited in Moto-Hakone. Kansai is translated „east of the border“ and Kanto „west of the border“. Up to today there is some teasing between Kanto and Kansai people. This is often used in Anime. It is like between North Germans and Bavarians.
