Beverly Hills<\/a> —<\/strong> Ein uber bringt mich zum Rodeo Drive<\/a> bei Beverly Hills. Es ist die Einkaufsstra\u00dfe der Reichen und Sch\u00f6nen, bzw. derer die glauben, dass sie das sind. Es ist eher so ein Bucket-List-Ding. Die Stra\u00dfe ist nicht wirklich spannend. Aber heute ist hier ein Classic Car Treffen.<\/p>\n

Die Show ist eine Mischung aus klassischen amerikansichen und europ\u00e4ischen Autos. Riesige Stra\u00dfenkreuzer<\/a> der 50er und\u00a0 60er (Buick LeSabre, Plymouth Belvedere, Chevrolet Bel Air, Cadillac DeVille) stehen hier neben einem Porsche 356<\/a>. Ich finde sogar das Batmobil<\/a> aus der Adam West-Fernsehserie. Ich glaube aber nicht, dass es ein Orignal ist.<\/p>\n

Nervig sind die Amerikaner. Die grabblen hier jedes Fahrzeug an, versuchen T\u00fcren zu \u00f6ffnen und einzusteigen. Absperrungen werden ignoriert. Deren Gl\u00fcck, dass die Sicherheitsdienste hier so gut wie nichts d\u00fcrfen. In Europa h\u00e4tten die schon l\u00e4ngst eine gelangt bekommen.<\/p>\n

Der Rodeo Drive endet am Beverly Hills Garden Park<\/a> mit dem ber\u00fchmten Brunnen und dem Schild. Dahinter liegt Wohngegend der Reichen. Ich laufe ein wenig durch die Stra\u00dfen. Hier zwischen Santa Monica Blvd und Sunset Blvd stehen schon beachtliche Bauten. Und hinter Beverly Hills liegt Bel Air, aber dorthin laufe ich nicht mehr. Ich gehe zur\u00fcck zur Car Show.<\/p>\n

Keine Ahnung warum, aber ich entscheide mich, zu Fu\u00df zu den Tar Pits zu laufen. \u00dcber 3 km den Wilshire Blvd entlang. Das war Fehler Nummer 2 des heutigen Tages. Fehler 3 war es, nicht den kleinen Umweg zum Nakatomi Plaza<\/em><\/a> zu laufen.<\/p>\n

Die Strecke zieht sich. Ich brauche ein Bier. Mit dem La Gondola<\/em><\/a> w\u00e4hle ich nat\u00fcrlich eines der teuersten Restaurants. Aber ich will ja nur einen Drink. Ich muss zugeben, dass Essen sieht super aus. Leider bin ich immer noch vom Japaner vorhin ges\u00e4ttigt.<\/p>\n

Weiter gehts. Hier steht sogar, einsam und verlassen, ein „Beverly Hills“-Schild. OK. Gut. Warum nicht? Ein Blick auf die Karte verr\u00e4t. Der Stadtteil beginnt offiziell hier am San Vicente Blvd. Dann ergibt das Schild nat\u00fcrlich einen Sinn.<\/p>\n

La Brea Tar Pits<\/a> —<\/strong> Endlich bin ich am Ziel. F\u00fcr einen Besuch in Petersen Automotive Museum<\/a><\/em>, dem Academy Museum of Motion Pictures<\/a><\/em> oder dem LA Museum of Art<\/a><\/em> fehlt mir aber die Zeit. Es ist schon weit nach 17 Uhr. In ein paar Minuten setzt die D\u00e4mmerung ein. Ich laufe um die Baustelle herum und durch den\u00a0 Park. Hier sind sie, hinter einem Zaun, die La Brea Tar Pits. Es riecht nach Teer<\/a>.<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Hier blubbert ein See mit Teer vor sich hin. \u00dcberall sieht man Blasen aufsteigen und zerplatzen. Die Tar Pits kenne ich \u00fcbrigens durch The Big Bang Theory<\/em><\/a>. Da hier auch Dinosaurierknochen gefunden wurde, stehe hier ein paar Plastikdinos am Ufer. Hmmm, in den 8 Jahren in Koblenz habe es nie ins Neandertal geschafft. Das hat zwar nix mit Dinos zu tun, f\u00e4llt mir aber gerade ein.<\/p>\n

Die D\u00e4mmerung ist nun in vollem Gang. Die perfekte Zeit, um ein paar Fotos von der Kunstinstallation „Urban Light<\/a>“ zu machen. Das sind 202 alte Stra\u00dfenlaternen aus LA, die restauriert und zu einer Installation direkt am Eingang des LA County Museum of Art<\/a> aufgestellt sind. Verglichen mit der heutigen Stra\u00dfenbeleuchtung haben die Dinger echt stil. Ich frage mich, ob die verschiedenen Designs aus verschiedenen Jahren oder verschiedenen Stadtteilen stammen.<\/p>\n

Sunset Blvd <\/a>(mal wieder) —<\/strong> Es ist zu dunkel f\u00fcr weitere Fotos, aber zu fr\u00fch f\u00fcrs Hotel. Was tun? Sunset Blvd. Ja, da war ich gestern schon. Ich habe aber keine bessere Idee. Ich laufe den Boulevard etwas entlang, in der Hoffnung einen interessanten Ort zu finden. Vergebens. Und so ende ich wieder einmal in Lemmy’s Lounge<\/a><\/em> des Rainbow Bar & Grill<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Burger oder ein Philly Cheese Steak? Burger hatte ich gestern. Hmmm. Burger. Das Philly klingt zu heftig. Ich w\u00e4hle den Bacon Cheeseburger und Salat als Beilage. Dazu ein Angel City IPA<\/a><\/em> vom Fass, wie gestern.<\/p>\n

Der Abend endet mit einer weiteren (teuren) uber-Fahrt zur\u00fcck nach Glendale. Dieses Mal auf einer anderen Route. Keine Ahnung wo wir langfahren.<\/p>\n

Das war also LA. Ich habe nicht alles geschafft. Daf\u00fcr ist die Stadt zu weitl\u00e4ufig, die interessanten Orte (The Getty) zu weit auseinander und anders als in Tokyo gibt es kein wirklich gutes \u00d6PNV-Netz. Es gibt eine U-Bahn, die ist aber eher Alibi. F\u00fcr morgen bleiben Star Trek, MASH und Santa Monica.<\/p>\n

Beverly Hills<\/a> —<\/strong> An uber takes me to Rodeo Drive<\/a> near Beverly Hills. It’s the shopping street of the rich and famous, or those who think they are. It’s more of a bucket list thing. The street is not really exciting. But today there’s a classic car meeting here.<\/p>\n

The show is a mixture of classic American and European cars. Huge road cruisers (land yachts<\/a>) from the 50s and 60s (Buick LeSabre, Plymouth Belvedere, Chevrolet Bel Air, Cadillac DeVille) are parked next to a Porsche 356<\/a>. I even find the Batmobile<\/a> from the Adam West TV series. But I don’t think it’s an original.<\/p>\n

The Americans are annoying. They grab every vehicle here, try to open doors and get in. Barriers are ignored. It’s lucky for them that the security services are not allowed to do almost anything here. In Europe, they would have gotten one long ago.<\/p>\n

Rodeo Drive ends at Beverly Hills Garden Park<\/a> with the famous fountain and sign. Behind it is a residential area for the rich. I walk through the streets for a while. Between Santa Monica Blvd and Sunset Blvd there are already some impressive buildings. And behind Beverly Hills is Bel Air, but I don’t go there anymore. I go back to the Car Show.<\/p>\n

I don’t know why, but I decide to walk to the Tar Pits. Over 3 km along Wilshire Blvd. That was mistake number 2 of today. Mistake number 3 was not taking the short detour to Nakatomi Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The route drags on. I need a beer. Naturally, I choose La Gondola<\/em><\/a>, one of the most expensive restaurants. But I only want a drink. I have to admit, the food looks great. Unfortunately, I’m still full from the Japanese restaurant earlier.<\/p>\n

On we go. There’s even a \u201cBeverly Hills\u201d sign here, lonely and deserted. OK. Good. Why not? A look at the map reveals. The district officially begins here on San Vicente Blvd. Then of course the sign makes sense.<\/p>\n

La Brea Tar Pits —<\/a> I’ve finally reached my destination. But I don’t have time to visit the Petersen Automotive Museum<\/a><\/em>, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures<\/a><\/em> or the LA County Museum of Art<\/a><\/em>. It’s already well after 5pm. In a few minutes, dusk sets in. I walk around the construction site and through the park. Here they are, behind a fence, the La Brea Tar Pits. It smells of tar<\/a>.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> A lake of tar is bubbling away here. You can see bubbles rising and bursting everywhere. I know the tar pits from The Big Bang Theory<\/a><\/em>. Since dinosaur bones were also found here, there are a few plastic dinosaurs on the shore. Hmmm, in my 8 years in Koblenz I never made it to Neandertal. That has nothing to do with dinosaurs, but it just occurred to me.<\/p>\n

Dusk is now in full swing. The perfect time to take a few photos of the \u201cUrban Light<\/a>\u201d art installation. These are 202 old streetlights from LA that have been restored and set up as an installation right at the entrance to the LA County Museum of Art<\/a>. Compared to today’s street lighting, these things really have style. I wonder if the different designs are from different years or different neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Sunset Blvd<\/a> (again) — I<\/strong>t’s too dark for more photos, but too early for the hotel. What to do? Sunset Blvd — Yes, I was there yesterday. But I have no better idea. I walk along the boulevard a bit, hoping to find an interesting place. In vain. And so I end up once again in Lemmy’s Lounge<\/a><\/em> at the Rainbow Bar & Grill<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Burger or a Philly cheese steak? I had a burger yesterday. Hmmm. Burger. The Philly sounds too strong. I choose the bacon cheeseburger and salad on the side. And a Angel City IPA<\/a><\/em> on tap, like yesterday.<\/p>\n

The evening ends with another (expensive) uber ride back to Glendale. This time on a different route. No idea where we were going.<\/p>\n

So that was LA. I didn’t manage to see everything. The city is too spread out for that, the interesting places (The Getty) too far apart and, unlike Tokyo, there isn’t a really good public transport network. There is a subway, but it’s more of an alibi. Star Trek, MASH and Santa Monica remain for tomorrow.<\/p>\n
