Heute k\u00fcmmere ich mich um den San Andreas Graben,<\/a> auch als San-Andreas-Verwerfung bekannt. Es wird bestimmt ein l\u00e4ngerer Bericht. Das wei\u00df ich jetzt schon.<\/p>\n

Einleitung<\/strong><\/h5>\n

An der Westk\u00fcste der USA treffen zwei tektonische Platten aufeinander: die nordamerikanische Platte<\/a> und die pazifische Platte<\/a>. Monterey liegt geologisch nicht in bzw. auf Nordamerika, sondern ist Teil des Pazifik. Die beiden Platten gleiten aneinander vorbei. Die Kontaktstelle ist der San-Andreas-Graben (und ein paar zugeh\u00f6rige, abzweigende tektonische Verwerfungen).<\/p>\n

Von S\u00fcden kommend. Die Verwerfung beginnt im Golf von Kalifornien. Hier gleiten die pazifische und die nordamerikanische Platte auseinander (Spreizungszone). Etwas auf H\u00f6he des Saltonsee geht die die Plattenbewegung in ein aneinander Vorbeigleiten \u00fcber.\u00a0 Die Verwerfung zieht sich dann fast durch ganz Kalifornien, immer k\u00fcnstennah, bis etwa kurz vor Mendocino. Hier taucht die Vewerfun nicht nur ins Meer ab, sondern ein dritten Platte, die Juan-de-Fuca-Platte<\/a>, kommt ins Spiel. Hier haben dann die Cascadia–<\/b>Subduktionszone<\/a> und eine Spreizungszone.<\/p>\n

Auf der pazifischen Platte und auch der nordamerikanischen Platte gibt es weitere Verwerfungen, die parallel zum San-Andreas-Graben verlaufen. So liegt zum Beispiel die San Francisco Bay zwischem San-Andreas-Graben und der Hayward-Vewerfung.<\/p>\n

Die Platten bewegen sich mit etwa 20 bis 35 mm pro Jahr aneinander vorbei. Die Bewegung ist aber nicht konstant. Die Platten verhaken sich. Es bauen sich Spannungen auf, die sich dann in einem Erdbeben entladen. Da k\u00f6nnen sich binnen Sekunden die Platten um mehrere Meter gegeneinander verschieben. Beim Erdbeben 1906, das San Francisco verw\u00fcstete, gab es eine Relativverschiebung von 6 m. Das Fort-Tejon-Erdbeben von 1857 soll es sogar auf bis zu 9 m geschafft haben.<\/p>\n

Es ist leicht die St-Andreas-Verwerfung auf Satellitenbilder zu sehen. Am Boden ist es schwieriger, aber nicht unm\u00f6glich. Es gibt drei Orte, die ich besuchen werde: Parkfield, Wallace Creek und Tejon-Pass.<\/p>\n

Today I’m looking at the San Andreas Fault<\/a>. It will certainly be a longer report. I already know that.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/h5>\n

Two tectonic plates meet on the west coast of the USA: the North American plate<\/a> and the Pacific plate<\/a>. Monterey is not geologically located in or on North America, but is part of the Pacific. The two plates slide past each other. The point of contact is the San Andreas Fault (and a few associated tectonic faults).<\/p>\n

Coming from the south. The fault begins in the Gulf of California. Here the Pacific and North American plates are sliding apart (spreading zone). Somewhat at the level of the Salton Sea, the plate movement changes to a sliding past each other. The fault then runs almost all the way through California, always close to man-made structures, until shortly before Mendocino. Here the Vewerfun not only plunges into the sea, but a third plate, the Juan de Fuca plate<\/a>, comes into play. Here we have the Cascadia subduction zone<\/a> and a spreading zone.<\/p>\n

There are other faults on the Pacific plate and the North American plate that run parallel to the San Andreas Fault. San Francisco Bay, for example, lies between the San Andreas Fault and the Hayward Fault.<\/p>\n

The plates move past each other at about 20 to 35 mm per year. However, the movement is not constant. The plates become entangled. Tensions build up, which are then released in an earthquake. Within seconds, the plates can shift against each other by several meters. In the 1906 earthquake that devastated San Francisco, there was a relative displacement of 6 meters. The Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857 is even said to have reached up to 9 meters.<\/p>\n

It is easy to see the St Andreas Fault on satellite images. It’s more difficult on the ground, but not impossible. There are three places I will visit: Parkfield, Wallace Creek and Tejon Pass.<\/p>\n
