Heute sind die ersten Auftaktveranstaltungen zum Rennen. Ich h\u00e4tte echt l\u00e4nger schlafen k\u00f6nnen. Danke Amtrak.<\/p>\n

Ach ja, das Rennen. Das Indy 500.<\/a> Es ist eines der gr\u00f6\u00dften Rennsport-Ereignisse in den USA, so ber\u00fchmt wie bei uns LeMans oder das 24-Stunden-Rennen auf dem N\u00fcrburgring. Die Renndinstanz sind 500 Meilen (ca 800 km). Was ich erst hier lerne ist, dass 250 Runden gefahren werden. Da macht das Oval 2,5 Meilen (4 km) lang. Die langen Gerade sind damit knapp 1 km lang und so sind die Trib\u00fcnen. Das erkl\u00e4rt auch die erwarteten knapp 400.000 Zuschauer.<\/p>\n

Heute steht au\u00dferdem ein Hotelwechsel an, sp\u00e4ter. Nach dem Checkout und dem Kofferparken gehe ich zum White River State Park. Weiter geht es am Kanal nach Norden. Dir Geb\u00e4ude links und rechts wirken relativ neu. Ich vemute, die haben das Gebiet am Kanal renoviert.<\/p>\n

Ich finde die Indiana Steam Clock<\/a>, eine Uhr, die mit Dampf betrieben wird. Es gibt ein 9\/11 Memorial. Keine Ahung was das hier soll, aber egal. Die Berliner Mauer steht ja auch \u00fcberall. An der Kanalbiegung gibt es eine Fu\u00dfg\u00e4ngerbr\u00fccke, die an die Br\u00fccken in Venedig erinnert. Der Kanal endet an der 11th Street an einem Geb\u00e4ude der Universit\u00e4t. Bis hier war es ein entspannter Spaziergang, so gar nicht amerikanisch.<\/p>\n

Dann holt mich die USA ein. Ich will weiter zum Indianapolis Propylaeum<\/a>. Dazu muss ich den irgendwie den Stra\u00dfenspaghetti der I-65 und bei Baustellengebiet queren. Der Weg hinauf zur 14th Street nicht lustig. Und hier liegt wirklich viel M\u00fcll am Stra\u00dfenrand.<\/p>\n

In der N Delaware St angekommen bin ich zur\u00fcck im Sightseeing-Modus. Hier stehen viele alte H\u00e4user aus der … in Deutschland w\u00fcrden wir es Gr\u00fcnderzeit nennen. Mein erster Stopp ist das Indianapolis Propylaeum. Etas s\u00fcdlich ist die Benjamin Harrison Presdiential Site<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nun geht es zur\u00fcck in Richtung Downtown. zur American Legion Mall<\/a>.<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ich bef\u00fcrchte sehr viel Patriotismus und Pathos und werde nicht entt\u00e4uscht. Ehre. Mut. Opferbereitschaft. Heimat. Es gibt einen Obelisk und nat\u00fcrlich das riesige War Memorial. Es ist ein schmaler Grad zwischen den Kriegsgefallenen zu Gedenken und den Tod auf dem Schlachtfeld zu glorifizieren.<\/p>\n

Morgen wird die Indy-500-Parade hier um die Mall marschieren. Au\u00dferdem ist Memorial Day. Das War Memorial ist bereits mit Flaggen geschm\u00fcckt. Soldaten stehen als Ehrenwache am Eingang.<\/p>\n

Nur ein paar Stra\u00dfen s\u00fcdlich ist das Soldier & Sailors Monument<\/a>. Japp, Patriotismus und Pathos sind noch nicht zu Ende. Die Kombination mit der Dekoration f\u00fcr das Indy-500 ist etwas verwirrend. Hier treffe ich auch ein paar extrem getunte Autos und Motorr\u00e4der. Viel mit Flaggen und Veteranensymbolen.<\/p>\n

Ich stoppe f\u00fcr Mittagessen im The Block Bistro and Grill<\/a> und komme ins Gespr\u00e4ch mit dem Eigent\u00fcmer, Terry Anthony<\/span>. Eine der Begegnungen, die man nicht planen kann.<\/p>\n

Jetzt muss ich aber los, gleich startet der Carb Day<\/a>. Ich eile zur\u00fcck zum Hotel, vorbei an der Washington Street, die ich von heute morgen kenne. Die Koffer eingesammelt und schon geht es mit einem uber zum Wyndham Indianapolis Airport<\/a><\/em> am Flughafen. Es liegt am Flughafen mit Shuttle-Service und war erschwinglich.<\/p>\n

Und dann geht es auch schon weiter. Der n\u00e4chste uber, ich nutzte die in letzter Zeit wirklich oft, bringt mich zum Speedway. Ich mache mich auf den Weg zur Nordostecke des Ovals, wo das Konzert stattfindet. Jetzt merke ich wie gro\u00df dieses Oval ist. Diagonal durch, der Haupteingang ist dummerweise im S\u00fcdwesten, sind knapp 2 km. Das zieht sich.<\/p>\n

Es ist kurz nach 16 Uhr. Die Party l\u00e4uft. Die Vorband ist schon am Spielen. Die Stimmung ist ausgelassen. Die Sonne brennt von oben. Dann ist es soweit. Bryan Adams<\/a> tritt auf. ‚Murrica. Die Stimmung ist besonders. Es ist nicht ganz meine Musik, aber Bryan Adams in diesem Meer aus patriotischem rot-wei\u00df-blau zu sehen ist etwas Besonderes.<\/p>\n

Nach dem Konzert verlasse ich zeitig das Oval. Es ist noch hell. Unten beim Kreisverkehr an der S\u00fcdwestecke der Rennstrecke, da wo der Haupteingang ist, ist eine Blockparty<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> in der N Main St.<\/p>\n

Hier geht es bunt her. Mehrere alte Rennwagen sind ausgestellt, und geben Einblick in die Geschickte des Indy Speedway. Mit Einbruch der D\u00e4mmerung bestelle ich ein uber. Ich w\u00e4hle den Pickup-Punkt etwas abseits, W 15th & N Auburn. Das sollte es den uber-Fahrer einfacher machen und es verk\u00fcrzt meine Strecke.<\/p>\n

Zur\u00fcck im Hotel will ich nur noch ein Feierabendbier und ins Bett. CarbDay hat iregendwas mit Umweltschutz zu tun. F\u00fcr mich war es ein CarbDay, wenn ich das ganze Bier zusammenz\u00e4hle, dass mich bei der Hitze hydriert hat. Das hat Carbs und ist auch carbonated.<\/p>\n

Today are the first opening events of the race. I really could have slept longer. Thank you Amtrak.<\/p>\n

Oh yes, the race. The Indy 500<\/a> is one of the biggest racing events in the USA, as famous as LeMans or the 24-hour race at the N\u00fcrburgring. The race distance is 500 miles (approx. 800 km). What I only learn here is that 250 laps are driven. That makes the oval 2.5 miles (4 km) long. The long straights are therefore just under 1 km long and so are the grandstands. This also explains the expected 400,000 spectators.<\/p>\n

I also have to change hotels later today. After checking out and parking my bags, I head to White River State Park. I continue north along the canal. The buildings to the left and right look relatively new. I assume they have renovated the area along the canal.<\/p>\n

I find the Indiana Steam Clock<\/a>, a steam-powered clock. There is a 9\/11 Memorial. I have no idea what this is for, but never mind. The Berlin Wall is everywhere. There is a pedestrian bridge at the bend in the canal, reminiscent of the bridges in Venice. The canal ends at 11th Street at a university building. Up to here it was a relaxed walk, not at all American.<\/p>\n

Then the USA catches up with me. I want to go on to the Indianapolis Propylaeum<\/a>. To do so, I have to somehow cross the spaghetti of I-65 and the construction zone. The way up to 14th Street is not fun. And there really is a lot of garbage on the side of the road here.<\/p>\n

Arriving on N Delaware St, I’m back in sightseeing mode. There are lots of old houses here from the … in Germany we would call it the Gr\u00fcnderzeit. My first stop is the Indianapolis Propylaeum. A little to the south is the Benjamin Harrison Presdiential Site<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now I head back downtown to the American Legion Mall<\/a>. I fear a lot of patriotism and pathos and I am not disappointed. Honor. Courage. Sacrifice. Homeland. There is an obelisk and of course the huge War Memorial. There is a fine line between commemorating the war dead and glorifying death on the battlefield.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow, the Indy 500 parade will march around the mall here. It’s also Memorial Day. The War Memorial is already decorated with flags. Soldiers stand guard of honor at the entrance.<\/p>\n

Just a few streets south is the Soldier & Sailors Monument<\/a>. Yep, patriotism and pathos are not over yet. The combination with the decoration for the Indy 500 is a bit confusing. I also come across a few extremely tuned cars and motorcycles here. Lots of flags and veteran symbols.<\/p>\n

I stop for lunch at The Block Bistro and Grill<\/a> and strike up a conversation with the owner, Terry Anthony. One of those encounters you can’t plan.<\/p>\n

But now I have to go, Carb Day<\/a> is about to start. I hurry back to the hotel, past Washington Street, which I know from this morning. I collect my suitcases and take an uber to the Wyndham Indianapolis Airport<\/a><\/em>. It’s at the airport with a shuttle service and was affordable.<\/p>\n

And then I’m off again. The next uber, which I’ve been using a lot lately, takes me to the Speedway. I make my way to the north-east corner of the oval where the concert is taking place. Now I realize how big this oval is. Diagonally through, the main entrance is stupidly in the south-west, it’s almost 2 km. That’s a long way.<\/p>\n

It’s shortly after 4 pm. The party is underway. The support act is already playing. The atmosphere is exuberant. The sun is burning from above. Then it’s time. Bryan Adams performs. ‚Murrica. The atmosphere is special. It’s not quite my music, but seeing Bryan Adams<\/a> in this sea of patriotic red, white and blue is something special.<\/p>\n

After the concert, I leave the Oval early. It’s still light. Down by the traffic circle at the southwest corner of the racetrack, where the main entrance is, there’s a block party<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> on N Main St.<\/p>\n

It’s a colorful place. Several old racing cars are on display, giving an insight into the history of the Indy Speedway. As dusk falls, I order an uber. I choose the pickup point a little off the beaten track, W 15th & N Auburn. That should make it easier for the uber drivers and it shortens my route.<\/p>\n

Back at the hotel, all I want to do is have a beer after work and go to bed. CarbDay has something to do with environmental protection. For me it was a CarbDay, if I add up all the beer that kept me hydrated in the heat. It has carbs and is also carbonated.<\/p>\n
