Die zweite und dritte USA-Woche stehen im Zeichen der Wohnungssuche. Ich w\u00fchle mich durch das Internet. Zillow.com scheint eine zentrale Plattform f\u00fcr Wohnungen zu sein, so bei uns immoscout24.de. Wohnungen in meiner Kategorie gibt es genung. Ich sollte was finden.<\/p>\n

Aber die Preise; die Preise !!! 450 sqft (etwa 40 m\u00b2) gibt f\u00fcr etwa $2000. Das sind 50\u20ac\/m\u00b2. Und dann reden wir von etwas, das bei uns im Schrebergarten steht: Fast alle H\u00e4user in dieser Preisklasse sind aus Holz und Gipskarton. Geb\u00e4ude aus Stein sind unbezahlbar.<\/p>\n

Ich lerne schnell, dass man nicht in Seaside wohnen will. Del Monte Beach und La Mesa sind einfach nur teuer, selbst f\u00fcr die Preise hier. \u00dcber Carmel-by-the-Sea reden wir gar nicht erst.<\/p>\n

Ohne Auto werde ich mich Wohngebiet f\u00fcr Wohngebiet vorarbeiten. Heute steht Oak Grove, <\/strong>das Wohngebiet direkt neben der NPS, auf der Liste. Das Wohngebiet sind gut aus. Leider sind aktuell keine akzeptablen Wohnungen verf\u00fcgbar. Ein Apartment in der Ocean Ave<\/em> hat nicht einmal einen intakten Fu\u00dfboden.<\/p>\n

Die n\u00e4chste Suche wird sich um Wohnungen in Old Monterey<\/strong> k\u00fcmmern. Das ist das Gebiet s\u00fcdlich von Presidio (eine gro\u00dfe Army Base) zu dem auch die Innenstadt mit der Alverado Street geh\u00f6rt. So das Richtige ist nicht dabei; vielleicht die Wohnung in der Watson Street<\/em>, wenn ich nichts anderes finde. Das Wohngebiet sieht aber ok aus.<\/p>\n

Am n\u00e4chsten Tag k\u00fcmmere ich mich um das Wohngebiet rund um Casanova Avenue<\/strong> herum. Es sieht nicht ganz so h\u00fcbsch aus wie Oak Grove. Es gibt ein paar Apartmentkomplexe, die einen Pool haben. Einer steht sogar auf meiner Liste 825 Casanova Ave<\/em>.\u00a0 Der Preis ist etwas h\u00f6her, aber ein Pool ist ein Pool. Das Apartment ist aber in dritter Reihe vom Pool zwischen den Parkpl\u00e4tzen. Und werde ich den Pool \u00fcberhaupt benutzen? Weitere Orte sind 350 Ramona Ave<\/em>, das definitiv eine Option ist, und 696 Casanova Ave<\/em>, das auch einen Innenhof mit Pool hat.<\/p>\n

So langsam d\u00e4mmert es mir, dass alle Wohnungen einen extrem hochflorigen Teppich haben. Keine Ahnung was in dem Teppich wohnt, aber ich sollte meine Suche auf Laminat eingrenzen oder zumindest priorisieren. Und wer hat eigentlich diese Wandgasheizung erfunden? Wie soll die effektiv das ganze Apartment (auch das Bad zwei T\u00fcren weiter) heizen?<\/p>\n

Nun gebe ich New Monterey<\/strong> eine Chance. Hier gibt es mehrere Apartments: Spencer Street<\/em>,\u00a0 Hawthorne Street<\/em>, Irvine Street<\/em>. Von der Lighthouse Avenue geht es den Berg hinauf. Die Steigung ist beachtlich. Der Wanderung von Wohnung zu Wohnung wird zu einem Workout. Aber die Wohngegend gef\u00e4llt mir. Wirklich. So habe ich mir eine Wohngebiet in den USA au\u00dferhalb der gro\u00dfen Metropolen vorgestellt.<\/p>\n

Es gibt ein paar vielversprechende Kandidaten. Ich f\u00fclle Bewerberb\u00f6gen aus. Jetzt liegt es am Vermieter, den n\u00e4chsten Schritt zu machen. Ich treffe auch einen Bewohner, der demn\u00e4chst auszieht. Die Wohnung ist noch nicht gelistet, aber eventuell kann ich so die Konkurrenz ausstechen.<\/p>\n

Unter meinen Favoriten ist eine Wohnung in 725 Spencer Street<\/strong>. Sie hat Laminatboden und wirkt auch sonst ganz nett: kleiner Balkon, akzeptabel gro\u00dfe K\u00fcche. Ich zahle die Bewerbungsgeb\u00fchr. Ja, so etwas gibt es.<\/p>\n

Die erste Woche und das Wochenende sind schnell vorbei. 14 Tage sind nicht viel, um eine Wohnung zu suchen, zu finden, anzumieten und auch noch umziehen muss. Aber einen Vorteil hat die Wohnungssuche zu Fu\u00df. Ich habe einen gro\u00dfen Teil von Monterey erlaufen.<\/p>\n

Was hat sich sonst so getan<\/h5>\n

Am Mittwoch war ich bei der Bank<\/strong>. Ich ben\u00f6tige zwingend ein US-Konto. Nicht jeder Geldautomat akzeptiert ausl\u00e4ndische Kreditkarten (wie in Japan). Und noch schlimmer: Die Mietsicherheit muss als Scheck hinterlegt werden. Ja, die Amis arbeiten immer noch mit Schecks.<\/p>\n

Eine Kontoer\u00f6ffnung ohne SSN ist kniffelig. Aber es klappt, irgendwie. Ich habe jetzt ein Konto bei der Bank of America. Kreditkarten kommen demn\u00e4chst. Da ich noch nie eine Konto in den USA hatte ist mit Credit Score nicht existent. Ich bin nicht im System, nicht kreditw\u00fcrdig. Damit ich $500 ausgeben darf, muss ich erst $500 als Kaution hinterlegen. Die Kreditw\u00fcrdigkeit verbessert sich nur, wenn man Kredite aufnimmt und diese dann begleicht.<\/p>\n

Ich lerne, dass mein Konto zwei verschiedene Routing Numbers (Bankleitzahlen) hat: eingehend und ausgehend. Ich lerne dass es zwei Arten von Konten gibt: Savings Account und Credit Account. Ich lerne, dass sich Kreditkarten nicht automatisch begleichen. Ich muss aktiv das Geld \u00fcberweisen, oder das Minus bleibt auf der Karte und es fallen Zinsen an.<\/p>\n

Ich habe auch schon die ersten Restaurant und Kneipen<\/strong> erkundet. Das Nachtleben, wenn man es denn so nnen kann, scheint sich in der Alverado Street und drumherum abzuspielen. Einen ersten Favoriten habe ich gefunden: The Crown & Anchor<\/a>, ein British Pub.<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\n

Auf dem Weg zur Casanovoa Ave habe ich \u00fcbrigens „Dodi<\/a>“ gefunden, ein Gebrauchtwagenh\u00e4ndler, der prim\u00e4r Classic Cars auf dem Hof hat, die spannende Restaurationsobjekte sind. Ich bin versucht so ein Projekt bis zur Abreise durchzuziehen. Aber ich will auch Reisen. Und es sind bis zur Abreise nur noch 49 Wochenenden.<\/p>\n

The second and third week in the USA are dominated by house hunting. I trawl through the Internet. Zillow.com seems to be a central platform for apartments, like immoscout24.de here. There are enough apartments in my category. I should find something.<\/p>\n

But the prices; the prices !!! 450 sqft (about 40 m\u00b2) goes for about $2000, that’s 50\u20ac\/m\u00b2. And then we are talking about something that is in our allotment: Almost all houses in this price range are made of wood and plasterboard. Stone buildings are unaffordable.<\/p>\n

I quickly learn that you don’t want to live in Seaside. Del Monte Beach and La Mesa are just expensive, even for the prices here. Let’s not even talk about Carmel-by-the-Sea.<\/p>\n

Without a car, I’ll work my way through residential area after residential area. Today Oak Grove<\/strong>, the residential area right next to the NPS, is on the list. The residential area looks good. Unfortunately, there are currently no acceptable apartments available. One apartment on Ocean Ave doesn’t even have an intact floor.<\/p>\n

The next search will be for apartments in Old Monterey<\/strong>. That’s the area south of Presidio (a large army base), which also includes the city center with Alverado Street. I can’t find the right one; maybe the apartment on Watson Street if I can’t find anything else. But the residential area looks okay.<\/p>\n

The next day, I take care of the residential area around Casanova Avenue<\/strong>. It doesn’t look quite as nice as Oak Grove. There are a few apartment complexes that have a pool. One is even on my list 825 Casanova Ave. The price is a little higher, but a pool is a pool. But the apartment is third row from the pool between the parking lots. And will I even use the pool? Other locations include 350 Ramona Ave, which is definitely an option, and 696 Casanova Ave, which also has a courtyard with a pool.<\/p>\n

It’s slowly dawning on me that all apartments have extremely high pile carpet. No idea what lives in the carpet, but I should narrow down my search to laminate, or at least prioritize it. And who actually invented this wall gas heating? How is it supposed to effectively heat the whole apartment (including the bathroom two doors down)?<\/p>\n

Now I’m giving New Monterey<\/strong> a chance. There are several apartments here: Spencer Street, Hawthorne Street, Irvine Street. From Lighthouse Avenue, I head up the hill. The incline is considerable. The walk from apartment to apartment is a workout. But I like the neighborhood. I really do. This is how I imagined a residential area in the USA outside of the big metropolitan areas.<\/p>\n

There are a few promising candidates. I fill out application forms. Now it’s up to the landlord to take the next step. I also meet a resident who is moving out soon. The apartment isn’t listed yet, but I might be able to beat the competition.<\/p>\n

One of my favorites is an apartment at 725 Spencer Street<\/strong>. It has laminate flooring and otherwise looks quite nice: small balcony, reasonably sized kitchen. I pay the application fee. Yes, there is such a thing.<\/p>\n

The first week and the weekend are over quickly. 14 days is not much time to look for an apartment, find it, rent it and then have to move. But there is one advantage to looking for an apartment on foot. I walked a large part of Monterey.<\/p>\n

What else has happened<\/h5>\n

I went to the bank on Wednesday. I absolutely need a US account. Not every ATM accepts foreign credit cards (as in Japan). And even worse: the rental deposit has to be in the form of a check. Yes, the Americans still work with checks.<\/p>\n

Opening an account without an SSN is tricky. But it works, somehow. I now have an account with Bank of America. Credit cards are coming soon. Since I’ve never had an account in the US, my credit score is non-existent. I’m not in the system, not creditworthy. In order to be allowed to spend $500, I first have to put down a $500 deposit. Your credit score only improves if you take out loans and then pay them off.<\/p>\n

I learn that my account has two different routing numbers: incoming and outgoing. I learn that there are two types of accounts: Savings Account and Credit Account. I learn that credit cards don’t settle automatically. I have to actively transfer the money or the negative balance remains on the card and interest accrues.<\/p>\n
