23.01.2023 —<\/strong> Heute geht es nach Reston<\/a>, VA<\/a> zur deutschen Verbindungsstelle R\u00fcstung. Ich k\u00f6nnte fliegen. Aber ich habe mich f\u00fcrs Auto entschieden. Es ist das erste Mal, dass ich in einem nicht-EU-Ausland fahre. Es geht zur\u00fcck zum JFK<\/a>. Planungsfehler. Ich h\u00e4tte den Wagen irgendwie in Manhattan anmieten sollen. Diese Mal nehme ich den A-Train. Das spart eine Menge Zeit. Es regnet.<\/p>\n

Die Abholung des Mietwagen ist sehr amerikanisch. Man erkl\u00e4rt mir jeden einzelnen Punkt der Anmietung. Fehlt nur nich, dass ich eine Fahrstunde mit einem Fahrlehrer absolvieren muss. Arghhh. Jetzt verstehe ich, warum die in Schottland so nerv\u00f6s waren, als sie mir einen Mietwagen mit manueller Schaltung gaben. Amerikaner scheinen die geistige Reife eines Kleinkindes zu haben.<\/p>\n

Ich habe den Schl\u00fcssel: Chevrolet Camaro<\/a> 6.2 V8 SS. FUCK YEAH. ‚Murica. Das ist ein V8. Das sind 453 PS und 617 Nm. Das nenne ich ein Dienst-KfZ.<\/p>\n

Ich arbeite mich durch den New Yorker Verkehr zur I-95 vor <\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. <\/em>Es geht durch New Jersey, vorbei an Philadelphia und auf die I-295. Ich durchquere Dalaware und bin wieder auf der I-95. In Baltimore (Virginia) muss ich einen Umweg \u00fcber Highway 695 nehmen. Google meldet einen Riesenstau. <\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. Man bin ich froh, dass ich das US Phone habe. Wieder zur\u00fcck auf der I-95 geht es nach Washington, D.C<\/a>.<\/p>\n

New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. Ich h\u00e4tte nie gedacht, dass ich einmal hier entlang fahren werde, schon gar nicht innerhalb eines Tages.<\/p>\n

Es geht fast direkt zum Dulles International Airport, wo ich dieses Auto zur\u00fcckgeben muss. Ich lasse es mir nicht nehmen, vorher am B\u00fcro der Verbindungsstelle in Reston ein Foto zu machen. Ein vom Hotel organisierter uber bringt mich vom Airport zum Hotel (Homewood Suites by Hilton). Das Zimmer ist eher ein kleines Apartment, inklusive K\u00fcche. So etwas als Wohnung f\u00fcr das n\u00e4chste Jahr w\u00fcrde mir vollkommen reichen.<\/p>\n

26.01.2023 —<\/strong> Den beruflichen Teil \u00fcberspringe ich. Heute geht es nach Monterey<\/a>, CA<\/a>, mit Zwischenstopp am Denver Airport<\/a>. Denver<\/a>, CO<\/a>. Die riesigen US-Flaggen \u00fcberall im Terminalgeb\u00e4ude. Ja, ‚Murica.<\/p>\n

Es wird mein Standort f\u00fcr die n\u00e4chsten 350 Tage. Ich bin gespannt was mich erwartet. Nicht nur was meine Job oder die Wohnung angeht, die ich mir noch suchen muss, angeht; sondern auch wie ein Jahr USA auf mich wirken und mich ver\u00e4ndern (?) werden.<\/p>\n

Bis vor 2 Wochen war Monterey aufgrund extremer Regenf\u00e4lle ein Katastrophengebiet und musste sogar aus der Luft versorgt werden, da alle Stra\u00dfen \u00fcberflutet waren. Davon ist jetzt nichts zu sehen. Die Sonne scheint.<\/p>\n

Wir Flieger schwenkt auf Monterey Airport<\/a> ein. Ich sehe die K\u00fcste, die K\u00fcste von Kalifornien. Das da ist der Pazifik<\/a>. Das da ist die Central Coast. Surfer Dudes und so. Und ich sehe Golfpl\u00e4tze.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Es wird spannend. Der Blick von oben ist \u00fcberw\u00e4ltigend. Mein Gehirn realisiert es langsam. Ich werde in Kalifornien leben; Central Coast; direkt am Wasser; Kalifornien.<\/p>\n

Ein uber bringt mich zur Navy Lodge. Ich werde Gewahr eines riesigen Planungsfehlers (Nummer 2 heute): F\u00fcr meine Unterkunft ben\u00f6tige ich eine ITO, die ich als Zivilist nicht habe. Arghh. Es ist 17 Uhr. Ich habe 60 kg Gep\u00e4ck und kein Hotelzimmer. Null. Zumindest scheint die Sonne.<\/p>\n

Jetzt muss es schnell gehen. Das n\u00e4chste Hotel fu\u00dfl\u00e4ufig (und direkt neben der Naval Postgraduate School<\/a>) ist das Hyatt Regency. Ich buche schnell online ein Zimmer ($240, blo\u00df nicht nachdenken) und mache mich auf dem Weg. Die letzten Meter gehen steil bergauf. Zum Gl\u00fcck gabelt mich der G\u00e4rtner auf und bringt mich mit einem Golfcart zur Rezeption.<\/p>\n

Planungsfehler Nummer 3: Ich habe das Zimmer in der Hektik f\u00fcr morgen gebucht. Ich habe immer noch kein Zimmer f\u00fcr heute. Zum Gl\u00fcck ist das Zimmer auch heute verf\u00fcgbar und ich bekomme den gleichen Preis. Planungsfehler Nummer 4: Die Preise im Netz waren Netto, ohne Mehrwertsteuer, Resortgeb\u00fchr, Bettensteuer, usw. Egal.\u00a0 Ich bringe die Koffer aufs Zimmer, es ist riesig mit Blick auf den Pool, dusche und gehe runter an die Bar. Nach all dem Stress und Chaos, brauche ich einen Drink. Boulevardier<\/a>. Nice.<\/p>\n

So langsam sacken die Informationen und sortieren sich: USA, Kalifornien, Hyatt Regency Golf & Resort Hotel (F\u00fcnf Sterne), Pebble Beach Golf Corse (die ProAm starten hier n\u00e4chte Woche), Monterey (Salvatori Dali hat hier gelebt), Pazifikk\u00fcste, Carmel by the Sea (Clint Eastwood war hier B\u00fcrgermeister), … Das da drau\u00dfen ist der alte Golfkurs von Pebble Beach.<\/p>\n

Hatte ich schon erw\u00e4hnt, dass morgen meine Luftfracht angeliefert wird? Morgen. Wenn ich nur eine weitere Nacht habe. Ich werde also mit 260 kg Gep\u00e4ck auschecken. Suboptimal.<\/p>\n

Fu\u00dfmarsch. Ich gehe die Sloat Ave runter zum Strand, vorbei an der NPS, meine neue Arbeitsst\u00e4tte. Es ist dunkel. Es f\u00e4ngt an zu regnen. Aber ich muss die Informationen verarbeiten.<\/p>\n

Dann stehe ich am Strand: vor mir der Pazifik; Regen; M\u00f6ven p\u00f6beln mich an; Salz in der Luft; Wind; Dunkelheit; Horizont. Und da ist es. Das Gef\u00fchl, das ich sonst immer habe, wenn ich zur\u00fcck an der Ostsee bin: Heimat; Hier geh\u00f6re ich hin; hier passe ich rein. Ich f\u00fchle mich zu Hause. Ich hoffe das ist ein gutes Zeichen.<\/p>\n

23.01.2023 —<\/strong> Today I’m going to Reston<\/a>, VA<\/a> to the German Armaments Liaison Office. I could fly. But I’ve decided to drive. It’s the first time I’ve driven in a non-EU country. It’s back to JFK<\/a>. Planning error. I should have rented the car in Manhattan somehow. This time I take the A-Train. That saves a lot of time. It’s raining.<\/p>\n

Picking up the rental car is very American. Every single point of the rental is explained to me. The only thing missing is that I have to take a driving lesson with a driving instructor. Arghhh. Now I understand why they were so nervous in Scotland when they gave me a rental car with manual transmission. Americans seem to have the mental maturity of a toddler.<\/p>\n

I work my way through New York traffic to I-95 [sup]1[\/sup]. It goes through New Jersey, past Philadelphia and onto I-295. I cross Dalaware and am back on I-95. Back on I-95 again, I’m heading to Washington, D.C<\/a>.<\/p>\n

New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. I never thought I’d drive this far, especially not within a day.<\/p>\n

It’s almost straight to Dulles International Airport, where I have to return this car. I don’t miss the opportunity to take a photo at the liaison office in Reston beforehand. An Uber organized by the hotel takes me from the airport to the hotel (Homewood Suites by Hilton). The room is more like a small apartment, including a kitchen. Something like that would be enough for me to live in for the next year.<\/p>\n

26.01.2023 — <\/strong>I’ll skip the business part. Today I’m going to Monterey<\/a>, CA<\/a>, with a stopover at Denver Airport<\/a>. Denver<\/a>, CO<\/a>. The huge US flags everywhere in the terminal building. Yes, ‚Murica.<\/p>\n

It will be my base for the next 350 days. I’m excited to see what awaits me. Not just in terms of my job or the apartment I still have to find, but also how a year in the USA will affect me and change me (?).<\/p>\n

Until two weeks ago, Monterey was a disaster area due to extreme rainfall and even had to be supplied by air because all the streets were flooded. There is no sign of that now. The sun is shining.<\/p>\n

We fly into Monterey Airport<\/a>. I can see the coast, the coast of California. That’s the Pacific<\/a>. That’s the Central Coast<\/a>. Surfer dudes and all. And I see golf courses.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> It’s getting exciting. The view from the top is overwhelming. My brain is slowly realizing it. I’m going to live in California; Central Coast; right on the water; California.<\/p>\n

An uber will take me to the Navy Lodge. I become aware of a huge planning error (number 2 today): I need an ITO for my lodging, which I don’t have as a civilian. Arghh. It’s 5 pm. I have 60 kg of luggage and no hotel room. Zero. At least the sun is shining. For now.<\/p>\n

Now it has to be quick. The nearest hotel within walking distance (and right next to the Naval Postgraduate School<\/a>) is the Hyatt Regency. I quickly book a room online ($240, don’t think about it) and set off. The last few meters are a steep climb. Luckily, the gardener picks me up and takes me to reception in a golf cart.<\/p>\n

Planning mistake number 3: In the rush, I booked the room for tomorrow. I still don’t have a room for today. Luckily the room is also available today and I get the same price. Planning error number 4: The prices on the net were net, without VAT, resort fee, bed tax, etc. No matter. I take the suitcases to the room, it’s huge with a view of the pool, take a shower and go down to the bar. After all the stress and chaos, I need a drink. Boulevardier<\/a>. Nice.<\/p>\n

The information is slowly sinking in and sorting itself out: USA, California, Hyatt Regency Golf & Resort Hotel (five stars), Pebble Beach Golf Corse (the ProAm starts here next week), Monterey (Salvatori Dali lived here), Pacific Coast, Carmel by the Sea (Clint Eastwood was mayor here), … That’s the old Pebble Beach golf course out there.<\/p>\n

Did I mention that my air freight will be delivered tomorrow? Tomorrow. If I only have one more night. So I’ll be checking out with 260 kg of luggage. Suboptimal.<\/p>\n

Need a Walk. I walk down Sloat Ave to the beach, past the NPS, my new place of work. It’s dark. It’s starting to rain. But I have to process the information.<\/p>\n

Then I’m standing on the beach: the Pacific in front of me; rain; seagulls mobbing me; salt in the air; wind; darkness; horizon. And there it is. The feeling I always have when I’m back at the Baltic Sea: Home; this is where I belong; this is where I fit in. I feel at home. I hope that’s a good sign.<\/p>\n
