Donnerstag – 19. Januar 2023 – Deutschland<\/h5>\n

Heute ist der Tag. Der Shuttle bringt mich zum Terminal. Die Koffer sind erstaunlich schnell aufgegeben und so bleibt genug Zeit f\u00fcr einen Besuch in der Flughafen Lounge.<\/p>\n

Ich geh\u00f6re zur ersten Bordinggruppe. Ich fliege zum ersten Mal Business Class, und mit United. Die haben in diesem Flugzeug First Class und Business Class zusammengelegt. Ich habe einen Einzelsitz in einem kleinen Cubicle, mit Minit\u00fcr. Der Flug dauert 8,5 Stunden. Und ich muss gestehen, weniger Platz h\u00e4tte auch gereicht. Ich will mich nicht beschweren, aber das hier ist fast schon zu viel des Guten.<\/p>\n

Ich bin allerdings auch Snob. Also beginnt die Reise mit Champaign<\/del>, Sparkling Wine. Die Amis haben das ja nicht so mit der Abgrenzung von Sekt, Schaumwein und Champagner. Der Flug f\u00fchlt sie wie ein Urlaubsflug nach Japan an. Mein Gehirn hat offenbar noch nicht ganz realisiert, dass das hier ein ganzes Jahr dauern wird.<\/p>\n

Donnerstag – 19. Januar – USA<\/h5>\n

Kurz vor der Landung \u00fcberfliegen wir Long Island. Dies ist das erste St\u00fcck Land, das ich von den USA sehe. Bei der Einreise rettet mich mein Visum. Ich muss mich nicht in dieser ewig langen Schlange anstellen, die sicherlich 1-2 Stunden Lebenszeit verschlingen wird. Der Grenzbeamte fragt kurz nach meiner „Travel Order“; dann der ersehnte Stempel mit den K\u00fcrzeln „N-6“ und „D\/S“. Die Einreise hat nicht einmal 2 Minuten gedauert.<\/p>\n

Das ist also New York<\/a>. Das sind also die USA<\/a>. Ich habe keinen Plan. Das ist wie Japan 2004, nur anders. Mittlerweile war ich so oft in Tokyo, dass ich den \u00d6PNV benutze, als w\u00e4re es meine t\u00e4gliche Fahrt zur Arbeit. Hier in New York habe ich keinen Plan. Ich wei\u00df nur, dass ich nach Manhattan<\/a> muss. Mein Hotel ist in an der Water Street, gleich neben der Wall Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ein kurzer Check ergibt: Taxi ist schweineteuer. Also werde ich die U-Bahn nehmen; die New Yorker U-Bahn<\/a>. Aber vor die Fahrt zum Hotel haben die japanischen G\u00f6tter das Arrival Beer (inkl. Foto auf meinem Koffer) gesetzt. Im Nachgang betrachtet war das in den USA bestimmt illegal; Bier in der \u00d6ffentlichkeit.<\/p>\n

Mit dem Air Train geht es zum Haltepunkt Jamaica<\/a> in Queens<\/a>. Hier steige ich in den J-Train<\/a> nach Manhattan. Bis hierher muss ich sagen, dass es sauberer ist, als erwartet. Ich frage zwei Polizisten, die den Bahnsteig bewachen: „Was sollte ich in NY besichtigen? Was sollte ich in NY Essen?“ — Die Antworten sind schnell gegeben: Eine Fahrt mit der Staten Island Ferry<\/a>. Die ist gratis und bietet eine Superblick auf Manhattan Island und die Statue of Liberty<\/a>. Und man kann ein Bier trinken, da die F\u00e4hre als Privatgel\u00e4nde gilt. Hah. Dann war ich am Flughafen auch „safe“. Das Signature Dish von NYC ist New York Style Pizza; am Besten bei Joe’s Pizza<\/a>. Ein Shop ist sogar fu\u00dfl\u00e4ufig von meinem Hotel. Passt. Notiert.<\/p>\n

Die Zugfahrt dauert (J war der Local, nicht der Express). Der Zug quert den East River<\/a> auf der Williamsburg Bridge<\/a>.\u00a0 Die Skyline von Manhatten ist in Sicht, wenn auch verregnet. Wow. Ich bin wirklich in New York. Mein Gehirn ist immer noch dabei diese Information irgendwie zu verarbeiten.<\/p>\n

Ich erreiche die Haltestelle Broad Street<\/em>. Alter, ich bin in New York. Mittendrin. Durch den Regen und mit einem kleinen Umweg \u00fcber Pine Street geht es in die Water Street, wo mein Hotel ist. Das ist das New York, das ich erwartet habe. Es ist halb dunkel, verregnet und Dampf steigt auf. Ich stehe vor dem Hotel Indigo NYC Downtown<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Das Hotelzimmer ist OK. F\u00fcr die Gr\u00f6\u00dfe etwas teuer, aber das ist New York, oder? Es ist bereits dunkel und es regnet. Heute passiert nichts wichtiges mehr. Trotzdem will ich diesen allerersten Abend zumindest f\u00fcr einen kleinen Rundgang nutzen. Und da ich noch kein Abendessen hatte, k\u00f6nnen wir auch gleich Joe’s Pizza<\/a> aufsuchen. Fulton Street<\/a> ist ja nicht weit.<\/p>\n

Ich habe immer noch nicht realisiert, dass ich in New York bin, obwohl One World Trade Center<\/a> direkt in Verl\u00e4ngerung der Stra\u00dfe zu sehen ist. Die Pizza ist super. Gut m\u00f6glich, dass ich ein NY-Pizza-Typ bin.<\/p>\n

Mein K\u00f6rper ist noch auf europ\u00e4ischer Zeit. Ich werde fr\u00fch ins Bett fallen. Jedoch nicht ohne eine hei\u00dfe Dusche und einen Abstecher in die Cocktailbar.<\/p>\n

Thursday .. 19. January 2023 .. Germany<\/h5>\n

Today is the day. The shuttle takes me to the terminal. The suitcases are checked in surprisingly quickly, leaving enough time for a visit to the airport lounge.<\/p>\n

I belong to the first boarding group. I’m flying Business Class for the first time, and with United. They have combined First Class and Business Class on this plane. I have a single seat in a small cubicle with a mini door. The flight takes 8.5 hours. And I have to admit, less space would have been enough. I don’t want to complain, but this is almost too much of a good thing.<\/p>\n

But I’m also a snob. So the journey begins with Champaign<\/del>, Sparkling Wine. The Americans aren’t so good at differentiating between sparkling wine and champagne. The flight feels like a vacation flight to Japan. My brain obviously hasn’t quite realized that this is going to take a whole year before returning to Germany.<\/p>\n

Thursday .. 19. January .. USA<\/h5>\n

Shortly before landing, we fly over Long Island. This is the first piece of land I’ve seen in the USA. My visa saves me when I enter the country. I don’t have to queue up in this eternally long line, which is sure to consume 1-2 hours of my life. The border official briefly asks for my \u201cTravel Order\u201d; then the long-awaited stamp with the abbreviations \u201cN-6\u201d and \u201cD\/S\u201d. Entry took less than 2 minutes.<\/p>\n

So this is New York<\/a>. So this is the USA<\/a>. I don’t have a plan. It’s like Japan 2004, only different. By now I’ve been to Tokyo so often that I use public transportation as if it were my daily commute to work. Here in New York, I don’t have a plan. All I know is that I have to get to Manhattan<\/a>. My hotel is on Water Street, right next to Wall Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A quick check reveals: Cabs are fu**ing expensive. So I’m going to take the subway; the (in)famous New York City Subway<\/a>. But before the journey to the hotel, the Japanese gods have placed the Arrival Beer (including a photo of my suitcase). In retrospect, this was certainly illegal in the USA; open beer can in public.<\/p>\n

I take the Air Train to the Jamaica<\/a> stop in Queens<\/a>. Here I get on the J-Train<\/a> to Manhattan. Up to this point, I have to say that it’s cleaner than I expected. I ask two policemen guarding the platform: \u201cWhat should I see in NY? What should I eat in NY?\u201d — The answers are quickly given: A ride on the Staten Island Ferry<\/a>. It’s free and offers a great view of Manhattan Island and the Statue of Liberty<\/a>. And you can have a beer, as the ferry is considered private property. Hah. Then I was also \u201csafe\u201d at the airport. The signature dish of NYC is New York style pizza; best at Joe’s Pizza<\/a>. There’s even a satellite store within walking distance of my hotel. Fits. Noted.<\/p>\n

The train ride takes time (J was the local, not the express. That would have been Z). The train crosses the East River<\/a> on the Williamsburg Bridge<\/a>. The Manhattan skyline is in sight, albeit rainy. Wow. I really am in New York. My brain is still somehow processing this information.<\/p>\n

I reach the Broad Street stop. Dude, I’m in New York. Right in the middle of it. Through the rain and with a small detour via Pine Street, I reach Water Street, where my hotel is. This is the New York I was expecting. It’s half dark, rainy and steam is rising. I’m standing in front of the Hotel Indigo NYC Downtown<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The hotel room is OK. A bit expensive for the size, but that’s New York, isn’t it? It’s already dark and it’s raining. Nothing important is happening today. Nevertheless, I want to use this very first evening for at least a little walk around. And since I haven’t had dinner yet, we might as well go to Joe’s Pizza. Fulton Street<\/a> is not far away.<\/p>\n

I still haven’t realized that I’m in New York, even though One World Trade Center<\/a> can be seen directly across the street. The pizza is great. It’s quite possible that I’m a NY pizza guy.<\/p>\n

My body is still on European time. I’m going to fall into bed early. But not without a hot shower and a trip to the cocktail bar.<\/p>\n
