Heute geht es endlich nach Pittsburgh<\/a>. Die AnthroCon<\/a> wartet. Zwischen mir und der (zweit)gr\u00f6\u00dften<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> FurryCon liegen 700 km. Ja, auf der Karte sind es weniger, aber ich will Cleveland<\/a> besuchen.<\/p>\n

Die Fahrt beginnt entspannt. Ich verlasse Niagara Falls wie ich es erreicht habe: Niagara Scenic Parkway. Dieses Mal nehme ich die I-190. In Buffalo sehe ich die Peace Bridge<\/a>, eine weitere Br\u00fccke, die nach Kanada f\u00fchrt. Hier endet, bzw. beginnt der Niagara River<\/a>. Vor mir ist Lake Erie<\/a>. Ich wechsel auf die I-90, auf der ich bis Cleveland bleiben werde.<\/p>\n

Was sehen meine entz\u00fcndeten Augen: Hamburg<\/a>, am Highway 75. Wieso kommt mir das vertaut vor?<\/p>\n

Auf halber Strecke liegt Erie<\/a>. Zeit f\u00fcr einen kurzen Halt sollte ich haben. Vor Erie liegt der Presque Isle State Park<\/a>. Eigentlich will ich nur ein Foto vom Leuchtturm von 1873<\/a> machen. Ich genie\u00dfe kurz die Landschaft. Der Rauch der Waldbr\u00e4nde limitiert auch hier die Fernsicht.<\/p>\n

Cleveland<\/h5>\n

Weiter geht es auf der I-90. Und … O-H-I-O; Ohio. Eine Stunde sp\u00e4ter bin ich am Stadtrand von Cleveland. Ich fahre auf Sicht. Ich parke in der Willard Park Garage. Downtown ist nur ein paar Fu\u00dfminuten entfernt. Das Parkhaus ist direkt neben City Hall. Ich sehe das Football Stadium von hier.<\/p>\n

Wie auch in Toronto habe ich nur eine grobe Idee, was man sich anschauen kann. Erste Stopps sind The Mall<\/a> und Cleveland Public Square<\/a>. Da so langsam Hunger aufkommt, es ist schlie\u00dflich schon 15 Uhr, halte ich in einer der vielen Craft Breweries von Cleveland. Fragt mich nicht welche.<\/p>\n

Gest\u00e4rkt geht es die E 9th Street entlang, vorbei am alten Friedhof, zum Cleveland Baseball Stadion<\/a>. Hier verlasse ich die ausgetretenen Touristenpfade und gehe runter in das alte Hafengebiet am Cuyahoga River<\/a>. Eine halbe Br\u00fccke (keine Ahnung was mit dem Rest passiert ist) und eine Treppe bringen mich runter zur Canal Rd. Dann geht es \u00fcber eine gesperrte Eisenbr\u00fccke. Alte Stra\u00dfen, Industriebrachen und P\u00e4tze die aussehen, als h\u00e4tten hier mal Hallen gestanden.<\/p>\n

\u00dcberall stehen Hubbr\u00fccken \u00fcber den Fluss, f\u00fcr Eisenbahn und Fahrzeuge. Manche sehen aus, als w\u00e4re sie seit 50 Jahren au\u00dfer Betrieb und rosten vor sich hin. Andere scheinen noch aktiv. Ich mache ein Foto von der Hope Memorial Bridge<\/a>, vergesse aber die Art Deco Figuren Guardians of Traffic<\/em> zu fotografieren.<\/p>\n

Am alten W&Le RR Freight Depot bin ich wieder zur\u00fcck im normalen Stadtleben. Hier ist auch die Carter Road Bridge. Ich quere den Canal Basin Park und lande wieder am Fluss. Der macht hier eine 180\u00b0-Kurve. Ich sehe ein gro\u00dfes Frachtschiff, dass gerade r\u00fcckwarts unter der Center Street Bridge hindurchf\u00e4hrt. Nach links und rechts hat das Schiff nur ein paar Meter. Der Fluss ist hier eng wie eine Schleusenkammer.<\/p>\n

Das wird spannend. Der muss den ganzen Fluss r\u00fcckwarts bis zum Lake Erie. Es gibt keine Chance zu wenden. Ich vermute, dass sich die ein oder andere Fotogelegenheit ergibt und folge dem Schiff, bzw. eile ihm voraus. Es lohnt sich. Das Schiff passiert r\u00fcckwarts durch die Norfolk Southern Cuyahoga Lift Bridge<\/a> #1<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Es ist bald D\u00e4mmerung. Es wird Zeit f\u00fcr die letzten Fotos. Neben dem Great Lake Science Center ist die Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. F\u00fcr einen Besuch ist es zu sp\u00e4t, aber vor dem Geb\u00e4ude steht der Tourbus von Johnny Cash<\/a>. Von hier habe ich Blick auf den Lake Erie und das Frachtschiff von vorhin. Chance f\u00fcr ein Foto. Der Rauch der Waldbr\u00e4nde ist dick genug, um das Sonnenlicht so stark zu d\u00e4mpfen, dass ich keinen Filter brauche.<\/p>\n

On the Road again<\/h5>\n

Es beginnt die Fahrt in die Nacht. Bis Pittsburgh sind es etwa 140 Meilen, also 2,5 Stunden fahrt. Zur\u00fcck zur I-90 ist es einfach. Jetzt muss ich den Abzweiger zur I-77 finden. Dann verpasse ich den Abzweiger auf die I-480. Keine Panik. Da kommt gleich die I-80, auf der ich sowieso gelandet w\u00e4re. Von hier an wird die Fahrt langweilig. Regen setzt ein. Die I-80 wird zur I-76.<\/p>\n

Irgendwann kommt eine Mautstation, an der ich anhalten muss. Die Mautbox im Mietwagen funktioniert hier nicht. Nichts, was eine Kreditkarte nicht korrigieren kann.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh ist nicht mehr weit. Es geht durch ein bergiges Gebiet. Dann kommen I-79 und I-279. Ein Rechtskurve und da sind sie. Die Lichter von Pittsburgh. Jetzt nur keinen Fehler machen: Rechts ab und nicht auf die Br\u00fccke. Dann gleich wieder links und auf Fort Duquesne Br\u00fccke. Hinter der Br\u00fccke links, sofort die rechte Spur, sonst lande ich auf dem Bypass und nicht auf dem Fort Duquesne Blvd. Rechts. Rechts und vorm Park wieder rechts. Jetzt muss ich nur noch einen Parkplatz finden.<\/p>\n

Aber erst einmal die Koffer ausgeladen eingechecked und die Koffer im Zimmer abgeworfen. Wow. Das ist mal ein Hotelzimmer; mit kleiner K\u00fcche. Das Zimmer k\u00f6nnte fast so gro\u00df sein wie mein Apartment.<\/p>\n

Jetzt noch schnell Abendessen gesucht. Ich muss den Wagen eh umparken. Das Stra\u00dfennetz verwirrt mich, oder ich bin einfach nur m\u00fcde. Ich finde eine Pizzeria. Das muss reichen. Ich esse vor Ort. Anschlie\u00dfend parke ich den Wagen am Stra\u00dfenrand nahe des Hotels. Ich habe wirklich einen kostenfreien Parkplatz gefunden. Um alles andere k\u00fcmmere ich mich morgen. Ich will nur noch ins Bett.<\/p>\n

Today we’re finally heading to Pittsburgh<\/a>. AnthroCon<\/a> awaits. Between me and the (second) largest<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> FurryCon is 700 km away. Yes, it’s less on the map, but I want to visit Cleveland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The journey begins in a relaxed manner. I leave Niagara Falls the same way I arrived: via the Niagara Scenic Parkway. This time, I take the I-190. In Buffalo, I see the Peace Bridge<\/a>, another bridge leading to Canada. This is where the Niagara River<\/a> ends, or rather begins. Ahead of me is Lake Erie<\/a>. I switch to the I-90, which I will stay on until Cleveland.<\/p>\n

What do my inflamed eyes see<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>: Hamburg<\/a>, on Highway 75. Why does this seem familiar to me?<\/p>\n

Erie<\/a> is halfway. I should have time for a quick stop. Presque Isle State Park<\/a> is located before Erie. I just want to take a photo of the lighthouse from 1873<\/a>. I briefly enjoy the scenery. The smoke from the forest fires limits the view here as well.<\/p>\n

Cleveland<\/h5>\n

I continue on the I-90. And… O-H-I-O; Ohio. An hour later, I’m on the outskirts of Cleveland. I drive on sight. I park in the Willard Park Garage. Downtown is only a few minutes‘ walk away. The parking garage is right next to City Hall. I can see the football stadium from here.<\/p>\n

As in Toronto, I only have a rough idea of what to see. My first stops are The Mall<\/a> and Cleveland Public Square<\/a>. As I’m starting to get hungry\u2014it’s already 3 p.m., after all\u2014I stop at one of Cleveland’s many craft breweries. Don’t ask me which one.<\/p>\n

Refreshed, I walk along E 9th Street, past the old cemetery, to Cleveland Baseball Stadium<\/a>. Here I leave the beaten tourist track and head down to the old harbor area on the Cuyahoga River<\/a>. Half a bridge (no idea what happened to the rest) and a staircase take me down to Canal Rd. Then I cross a closed iron bridge. Old streets, industrial wastelands, and squares that look as if there used to be halls here.<\/p>\n

There are lift bridges over the river everywhere, for trains and vehicles. Some look as if they have been out of service for 50 years and are rusting away. Others still seem to be in use. I take a photo of the Hope Memorial Bridge<\/a>, but forget to photograph the Art Deco figures, Guardians of Traffic.<\/p>\n

At the old W&Le RR Freight Depot, I’m back to normal city life. The Carter Road Bridge is also here. I cross Canal Basin Park and end up back at the river. It makes a 180\u00b0 turn here. I see a large cargo ship passing backwards under the Center Street Bridge. The ship only has a few meters to spare on either side. The river is as narrow as a lock chamber here.<\/p>\n

This is going to be exciting. It has to go all the way back up the river to Lake Erie. There’s no chance to turn around. I suspect that there will be a few photo opportunities, so I follow the ship, or rather rush ahead of it. It’s worth it. The ship passes backwards through the Norfolk Southern Cuyahoga Lift Bridge<\/a><\/em> #1.<\/p>\n

It’s almost dusk. Time for the last few photos. Next to the Great Lake Science Center is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It’s too late to visit, but Johnny Cash<\/a>’s tour bus is parked in front of the building. From here, I have a view of Lake Erie and the cargo ship from earlier. A chance for a photo. The smoke from the forest fires is thick enough to dim the sunlight so much that I don’t need a filter.<\/p>\n

On the Road again<\/h5>\n

The journey into the night begins. It’s about 140 miles to Pittsburgh, which is a 2.5-hour drive. Getting back to I-90 is easy. Now I have to find the turnoff to I-77. Then I miss the turnoff to I-480. No panic. I-80 is coming up, which is where I would have ended up anyway. From here on, the drive becomes boring. Rain sets in. I-80 becomes I-76.<\/p>\n

At some point, I come to a toll booth where I have to stop. The toll box in the rental car doesn’t work here. Nothing a credit card can’t fix.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh isn’t far now. I drive through a mountainous area. Then I come to I-79 and I-279. A right turn and there they are. The lights of Pittsburgh. Now don’t make any mistakes: turn right and don’t go onto the bridge. Then immediately left and onto Fort Duquesne Bridge. After the bridge, turn left, immediately into the right lane, otherwise I’ll end up on the bypass and not on Fort Duquesne Blvd. Right. Right and then right again before the park. Now I just have to find a parking space.<\/p>\n

But first, I unloaded the suitcases, checked in, and dropped the suitcases off in the room. Wow. Now that’s a hotel room, with a small kitchen. The room could almost be as big as my apartment.<\/p>\n

Now I quickly looked for somewhere to have dinner. I have to move the car anyway. The road network confuses me, or maybe I’m just tired. I find a pizzeria. That’ll have to do. I eat there. Then I park the car on the side of the road near the hotel. I really did find a free parking space. I’ll take care of everything else tomorrow. I just want to go to bed.<\/p>\n
