Nieselregen begr\u00fc\u00dft mich. New Monterey hat immer noch keinen Strom, andere Stadtteile sind teilweise wieder da. Ich checke aus und lagere den Koffer an der Rezeption. Von der City Hall aus geht diesem Mal in Richtung Powell St. und diese entlang der Cable Car Strecke. Ich will wieder die Warteschlange umgehen.<\/p>\n

Da wo die Steigung losgeht und ich wirklich eine Fahrt mit der Cable Car will, finde ich ein japanisches Restaurant, das Maru<\/a><\/em>. Mittagessen; oder sp\u00e4tes Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck. Danach laufe ich doch den Berg (Nob Hill) hinauf. Oben bin ich wieder an der Kreuzung der Cable Car Strecken, und dieses Mal gehe ich die California St hinab. Ich will nach Chinatown, bekannt aus Big Trouble in Little China<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dieses Chinatown<\/a> kommt nicht an Yokohama ran, schl\u00e4gt aber New York um L\u00e4ngen. Ich gehe zuerst zum Dragon Gate, einem chinesischen Tor \u00fcber der Stra\u00dfe. Vor dem Tor, auf der Kreuzung, ist ein Kreis aus roten Ziegelsteinen in die Stra\u00dfe eingelassen. Ich lerne, dass dies die Position und Gr\u00f6\u00dfe einer unterirdischen L\u00f6schwasserzisterne markiert. Vor GPS und in einem Erdbebengebiet eine sicherlich lebensrettender Ansatz. Ich frage mich, wie viele dieser Kreise es noch gibt, und wie viele ich gestern \u00fcbersehen habe. Es soll da eine Webseite geben …<\/p>\n

Ich gehe nun in Richtung Coit Tower. Ja, dieses Chinatown hat was. Eventuell etwas touristy-kitschig, aber gut. Chinatown endet am Broadway. Hier schneidet die diagonal laufende Columbus Ave das Stra\u00dfengitter. Auf der anderen Stra\u00dfenseite beginnt Little Italy. Hmmm, genau wie in New York. Little Italy ist gleich neben Chinatown. Hier am Broadway war fr\u00fcher ein Teil vom Rotlichtbezirk von San Francisco. Ein gro\u00dfes Werbeschild f\u00fcr Big Al kenne ich aus Filmen der 70er.<\/p>\n

Ich organisiere etwas Proviant<\/em> bei Nick’s Liquor. Ich gew\u00f6hne mich langsam an diese Stores. Sie sind vergleichbar mit den „Sp\u00e4ti“ in Berlin oder Frankfurt. In den USA kommt die Komponente der notwendigen Lizenz zum Verkauf von Alkohol hinzu.<\/p>\n

Ich arbeite mich zur Filbert St vor und gehe schnell runter zum Washington Square<\/em><\/a>, um ein Foto von der Saints Peter and Paul Church<\/em><\/a><\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> zu machen.<\/p>\n

Jetzt k\u00fcmmere ich mich um den Tower. Die Filbert St ist eine von diesen extrem steilen Stra\u00dfen. Der Fu\u00dfweg ist eine Treppe; mit vielen Stufen. Auf gehts. Stufe um Stufe arbeite ich mich bergauf. Oben am Parkplatz angekommen habe ich eine gute Sicht auf Alcatraz. Die Sicht vom Tower muss noch besser sein. Auf geht’s.<\/p>\n

Der Coit Tower<\/a><\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> war die beste Idee des Tages. Die Aussicht ist genial: Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, die Serpentinen der Lombard Street, die Skyscraper von Downtown, der Hafen mit Pier 39 (Touristenfalle), Trasure Island, Oakland Bay Bridge, … Kurz, man sieht fast alle wichtigen Touristen-Hotspots von diesem Tower. San Francisco in 5 Minuten.<\/p>\n

Wieder unten auf dem Parkplatz sehe ich eine Treppe, die laut googleMaps runter zu den Hafenhallen f\u00fchrt. Es sind sehr, sehr viele Stufen. Der Telegraph Hill ist 84 m hoch. Zum Gl\u00fcck gehe ich sie bergab. Die Treppe f\u00fchrt an Wohnh\u00e4usern vorbei. Hier will ich kein Postbote sein und auch nicht wohnen. Der Weg erinnert mich sehr an meinen Ausflug nach Manazuru<\/a> (Japan 2019<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Ich komme bei Pier 33 raus und gehe von hier zur Touristenfalle Pier 39. Und genau an diesem Moment f\u00e4ngt es (mal) wieder an zu regnen und der Akku meiner Kamera ist leer. Und nat\u00fcrlich liegt der zweite Akku im Koffer im Hotel. Ich erkl\u00e4re den Tag f\u00fcr beendet und gehe zur\u00fcck zum Washington Square und dann in die Grant Ave. Ich hatte vorhin einen Irish Pub gesehen, das Maggie McGarry’s<\/em><\/a>; Zeit f\u00fcr ein Bier.<\/p>\n

Gest\u00e4rkt geht es durch Chinatown zur\u00fcck zum Dragon Gate. Hier ist ein Souvenirladen (Sophia’s Choice Gift Shop) und mir f\u00e4llt ein, dass ich mal eine Postkarte nach Deutschland schicken sollte. Ich quatsche l\u00e4nger mit dem Ladenbesitzer.<\/p>\n

Es ist bereits dunkel. Von hier bis zur Market St. sind es nur ein paar hundert Meter. Und das Hotel ist dann auch nicht mehr weit. Ich habe noch etwas Zeit, bevor mich WinterOwl abholt. Heute war ich viel weniger unterwegs. Dennoch bin ich platt. Gestern war es dann wohl doch etwas zu viel; erst der lange Fu\u00dfmarsch durch die Stadt und dann noch Frolic.<\/p>\n

Das war mein erster Ausflug nach San Francisco. Ich muss hier noch mal vorbeischauen; bei Sonnenschein. Frolic war ungew\u00f6hnlich, aber wie San Francisco eine zweite Runde wert. Die R\u00fcckfahrt nach Monterey ist ereignislos. Zur\u00fcck in Monterey ist aber der Strom seit ein paar Stunden wieder da. Perfektes Timing.<\/p>\n

I’m greeted by drizzle. New Monterey still has no power, other parts of the city are partially back. I check out and store my suitcase at reception. From City Hall, this time I head towards Powell St. and along the cable car route. I want to avoid the queue again.<\/p>\n

Where the incline starts and I really want a ride on the cable car, I find a Japanese restaurant, the Maru<\/a><\/em>. Lunch; or late breakfast. Afterwards I walk up the hill (Nob Hill). At the top, I’m back at the junction of the cable car routes, and this time I walk down California St. I want to go to Chinatown, known from Big Trouble in Little China<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This Chinatown<\/a> doesn’t come close to Yokohama, but it beats New York hands down. I first go to the Dragon Gate, a Chinese gate across the street. In front of the gate, on the intersection, a circle of red bricks is set into the street. I learn that this marks the position and size of an underground fire water cistern. In front of GPS and in an earthquake zone, this is certainly a life-saving approach. I wonder how many more of these circles there are, and how many I missed yesterday. There’s supposed to be a website …<\/p>\n

I now head towards Coit Tower. Yes, this Chinatown has something. Maybe a bit touristy and kitschy, but good. Chinatown ends at Broadway. Here, the diagonal Columbus Ave intersects the street grid.Little Italy begins on the other side of the street. Hmmm, just like in New York. Little Italy is right next to Chinatown. Here on Broadway used to be part of San Francisco’s red light district. I remember a big advertising sign for Big Al from movies from the 70s.<\/p>\n

I organize some provisions<\/em> at Nick’s Liquor. I’m slowly getting used to these stores.They are comparable to the \u201cSp\u00e4ti\u201d in Berlin or Frankfurt.In the USA, there is the added component of the license required to sell alcohol.<\/p>\n

I work my way to Filbert St and quickly walk down to Washington Square<\/em><\/a> to take a photo of Saints Peter and Paul Church<\/a><\/em><\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Now I’ll take care of the tower. Filbert St is one of those extremely steep streets. The walkway is a staircase; with lots of steps. Let’s go. Step by step, I work my way up. At the top of the parking lot, I have a good view of Alcatraz. The view from the tower must be even better. Let’s go.<\/p>\n

The Coit Tower<\/a><\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> was the best idea of the day.The view is brilliant: Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, the serpentines of Lombard Street, the skyscrapers of downtown, the harbor with Pier 39 (tourist trap), Trasure Island, Oakland Bay Bridge, …In short, you can see almost all the important tourist hotspots from this tower. San Francisco in 5 minutes.<\/p>\n

Back down in the parking lot, I see a staircase which, according to googleMaps, leads down to the harbor halls. There are many, many steps. Telegraph Hill is 84 meters high. Fortunately, I walk down them.The stairs lead past residential buildings.I don’t want to be a letter carrier here and I don’t want to live here either. The path reminds me a lot of my trip to Manazuru<\/a> (Japan 2019<\/a>).<\/p>\n

I come out at Pier 33 and walk from here to the tourist trap Pier 39. And right at this moment it starts raining (again) and the battery of my camera is empty. And of course the second battery is in the suitcase at the hotel. I declare the day over and head back to Washington Square and then to Grant Ave. I had seen an Irish pub earlier, the Maggie McGarry’s<\/a>; time for a beer.<\/p>\n

Strengthened, I head back through Chinatown to Dragon Gate. There is a souvenir store here (Sophia’s Choice Gift Shop) and I remember that I should send a postcard to Germany. I chat to the store owner for a while.<\/p>\n

It’s already dark. It’s only a few hundred meters from here to Market St. And the hotel is not far away either. I still have some time before WinterOwl picks me up. I’ve done a lot less walking today. But I’m still exhausted. Yesterday was probably a bit too much; first the long walk through the city and then Frolic.<\/p>\n

That was my first trip to San Francisco. I’ll have to visit here again; in the sunshine. Frolic was unusual, but like San Francisco, worth a second round. The drive back to Monterey is uneventful. Back in Monterey, however, the power has been back on for a few hours. Perfect timing.<\/p>\n
