Sonntag, 26.03.2023<\/strong> — Heute geht es nach Norden. Ich folge Highway 1, wechsel auf die 156, die dann auf in die 101 m\u00fcndet. Die 101 ist der Weg nach San Jose und San Francisco. Es geht erst durch die Hollister Hills und dann ich ein absolut flaches Areal. Mein erstes Ziel ist Gilroy. Hier gibt es ein paar Gebrauchtwagen, die ich mir anschauen will. Etwas passendes ist nicht dabei.<\/p>\n

Ich fahre auf der 152 weiter, oder vielmehr zur\u00fcck nach Watsonville. Die 152 f\u00fchrt als Passstra\u00dfe wieder durch die Berge, die hier eine Gipfelh\u00f6he von \u00fcber 1620 ft (500 m) erreichen<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Watsonville … and the Killer Klowns<\/h5>\n

Es gibt keinen Grund, nach Watsonville zu fahren. Au\u00dfer. Man kennt den B-Movie-Klassiker Killer Klowns from Outer Space<\/em>. Wer den Film nicht kennt, dem empfehle ich den Film f\u00fcr n\u00e4chstes Halloween, vielleicht als Doublefeature mit The Stuff<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Ich habe extra Screenshots vom Film ausgedruckt, um die Orte zu finden, soweit ich eine grobe Adresse ausfindig machen konnte bzw. die Orte heute noch existieren.<\/p>\n

Ich parke etwas abseits vom Stadtzentrum an der 152. Ich will das Auto schlie\u00dflich wiederfinden. Watsonville wirkt wie eine typische, vertr\u00e4umte Kleinstadt in den USA. Breite Stra\u00dfen, Einfamilienh\u00e4user und Bungalows mit Vorgarten und ohne Gartenzaun oder Hecke.<\/p>\n

Kurz vor der Kreuzung Lake Ave \/ Main St geht es los mit den Filmorten. Ich arbeite mich durch meine Screenshots. Ich f\u00fchle mich an Tokyo erinnert, wo ich die Filmorte vom Musikivideo When is the Future<\/em><\/a> von VNV Nation abgearbeitet hatte.<\/p>\n

Watsonville Plaza ist einer dieser Filmorte, ein kleiner Park mit einer Art Pavillion in der Mitte. Ich vermute, dass hier — back in the days — eine Kapelle am Sonntag Musik gespielt hat. So zumindest sieht es aus. Wo auch in San Francisco und New York ist der Park heute haupts\u00e4chlich von Obdachlosen und Drogenabh\u00e4ngigen bev\u00f6lkert. Erst jetzt f\u00e4llt mir auch, dass dies in Monterey nicht der Fall ist.<\/p>\n

Nach entspannten 2 Stunden habe ich eigentlich alles im Kasten, was ich hier in Watsonville finden konnte. Ich gehe E Beach St<\/em> zur\u00fcck in Richtung Auto. Es k\u00f6nnte nicht besser sein. Ein Eiswagen f\u00e4hrt vorbei. Ein Zeichen. Ich kaufe ein Eis. Das Wetter daf\u00fcr ist ideal.<\/p>\n

Der n\u00e4chste Ort ist auf dem Weg nach Santa Cruz, nahe New Brigthon State Beach. Da es ein Campingplatz mit Parkgeb\u00fchren ist, muss ich etwas kreativ werden. Ich parke in benachbarten Wohngebiet und gehe zu Fu\u00df. Zum Gl\u00fcck gibt es einen Wanderweg. Damit w\u00e4re auch diese Szene im Kasten.<\/p>\n

Santa Cruz<\/h5>\n

Dies wird mein letzter Stopp f\u00fcr heute. Ich arbeite mich durch die Stadt. Einen Parkplatz finden wird schwierig werden. Es ist Sonntag und es ist eine Touristenstadt. Ich versuche mein Gl\u00fcck wieder in einem Wohngebiet und bin erfolgreich nahe Lighthouse Ave; was f\u00fcr ein Zufall.<\/p>\n

Ich gehe runter zum Ufer. Hier zu parken war eine gute Idee. Ich habe einen perfekten Blick auf den Santa Cruz Wharf<\/em><\/a><\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span>, eine riesige Br\u00fccke aus Holz, dahinter der Strand mit dem Boardwalk<\/em><\/a><\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>, ein kleiner Freizeitpark mit Achterbahn und Riesenrad direkt am Strand.<\/p>\n

Ich besuche den Pier. So wirklich spanned ist es nicht. Man vergisst auch schnell, dass man auf einer Holzbr\u00fcck ist. Autos fahren. Es gibt Parkpl\u00e4tze ich Gesch\u00e4fte. Ich bin ein Snob, also entscheide ich mich f\u00fcr Vino by the Sea<\/a><\/em>. Ein Rotwein ist genau, was ich jetzt brauche.<\/p>\n

Im Anschluss besuche ich den Boardwalk. Die Fahrgesch\u00e4fte sind weniger was f\u00fcr mich. Aber besuchen muss ich ihn trotzdem. Viele werden den Boardwalk aus dem Film Lost Boys<\/em> kennen.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Aber auch Szenen f\u00fcr Killer Klowns<\/em> oder Us<\/em> wurden hier gedreht.<\/p>\n

Es geht auf die D\u00e4mmerung zu. Ich kaufe ein IPA Bier mit dem Namen Gaint DIPA, ein nettes Wortspiel auf den Giant Dipper, die Holzachterbahn von 1924, die hier immer noch im Betrieb ist. Der Abend beginnt. Ich genie\u00dfe die D\u00e4mmerung und die anbrechende Nacht.<\/p>\n

Der letzte Stopp f\u00fcr heute ist The Blue Lagoon \/ The Box. Heute Abend ist die Musikwahl Gothic, Industrial, Dark Electro. So etwas gibt es in Monterey nicht. Kurz nach Mitternacht trete ich die Heimreise an. Zur\u00fcck nach Monterey sind knapp eine Stunde Autofahrt und morgen fr\u00fch, vor der Arbeit, muss ich noch den Mietwagen zur\u00fcckbringen. Was f\u00fcr ein Tag. Was f\u00fcr ein Wochenende.<\/p>\n

Sonntag, 26.03.2023<\/strong> — Today I’m heading north. I follow Highway 1, change to the 156, which then joins the 101. The 101 is the route to San Jose and San Francisco. It first goes through the Hollister Hills and then through an absolutely flat area. My first destination is Gilroy. There are a few used cars here that I want to have a look at. There is nothing suitable.<\/p>\n

I continue on the 152, or rather back to Watsonville. The 152 is a pass road again through the mountains, which here reach a summit height of over 1620 ft (500 m)<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Watsonville … and the Killer Klowns<\/h5>\n

There’s no reason to go to Watsonville. Unless. You know the B-movie classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space. If you don’t know the movie, I recommend it for next Halloween, perhaps as a double feature with The Stuff.<\/p>\n

I printed out extra screenshots from the movie to find the locations, as far as I could find a rough address or the locations still exist today.<\/p>\n

I park a little away from the town center on 152, because I want to find the car again. Watsonville looks like a typical, dreamy small town in the USA. Wide streets, detached houses and bungalows with front gardens and no garden fences or hedges.<\/p>\n

Just before the intersection of Lake Ave and Main St, the movie locations begin. I work my way through my screenshots. I’m reminded of Tokyo, where I had worked through the movie locations from the music video When is the Future<\/em><\/a> by VNV Nation.<\/p>\n

Watsonville Plaza is one of these movie locations, a small park with a kind of pavilion in the middle. I suspect that — back in the days — a band used to play music here on Sundays. At least that’s what it looks like. As in San Francisco and New York, the park is now mainly populated by homeless people and drug addicts. Only now do I realize that this is not the case in Monterey.<\/p>\n

After a relaxed 2 hours, I’ve actually got everything I could find here in Watsonville. I walk back down E Beach St towards the car. It couldn’t be better. An ice cream van drives past. A sign. I buy an ice cream. The weather is ideal.<\/p>\n

The next place is on the way to Santa Cruz, near New Brigthon State Beach. Since it’s a campground with parking fees, I have to get a little creative. I park in a neighboring residential area and walk. Luckily there’s a hiking trail. So this scene is also in the can.<\/p>\n

Santa Cruz<\/h5>\n

This will be my last stop for the day. I work my way through the city. Finding a parking space will be difficult. It’s Sunday and it’s a tourist town. I try my luck again in a residential area and am successful near Lighthouse Ave; what a coincidence.<\/p>\n

I walk down to the shore. Parking here was a good idea. I have a perfect view of the Santa Cruz Wharf<\/em><\/a><\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span>, a huge wooden bridge, behind it the beach with the Boardwalk<\/em><\/a><\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>, a small amusement park with a roller coaster and Ferris wheel right on the beach.<\/p>\n

I visit the pier. It’s not really that exciting. You quickly forget that you’re on a wooden bridge. Cars are driving. There are parking lots and stores. I’m a snob, so I opt for Vino by the Sea<\/a><\/em>. A red wine is exactly what I need right now.<\/p>\n

I then visit the Boardwalk. The rides are less my thing. But I still have to visit it. Many people will know the Boardwalk from the movie Lost Boys.<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Scenes for Killer Klowns or Us were also filmed here.<\/p>\n

It’s getting towards dusk. I buy an IPA beer called Gaint DIPA, a nice pun on the Giant Dipper, the wooden roller coaster from 1924 that is still in operation here. The evening begins. I enjoy the twilight and the approaching night.<\/p>\n

The last stop for today is The Blue Lagoon \/ The Box. Tonight’s choice of music is gothic, industrial, dark electro. There’s nothing like that in Monterey. I head home shortly after midnight. It’s just under an hour’s drive back to Monterey and tomorrow morning, before work, I have to return the rental car. What a day. What a weekend.<\/p>\n
