Gestern war ich prim\u00e4r auf der Hudsonseite von Manhattan unterwegs. Heute starte ich mit dem East River<\/a>. Von Hotel (Water Street) geht es runter zum FDR Drive<\/a><\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. Vom Pier 17 mache ich ein paar Fotos von der Brooklyn Bridge<\/a><\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Um auf die Br\u00fccke zu gelangen, muss ich zur\u00fcck bis fast in die Mitte der Spitze von Mahattan. Ich finden einen Aufgang zum Brooklyn Bridge Promenade. Dies ist der Fu\u00dfg\u00e4ngerweg in der Mitte der Br\u00fccke, zwischen den Fahrbahnen. Einmal r\u00fcber nach Brooklyn und zur\u00fcck kostet Zeit. Ich gehe an der Pace University<\/a> vorbei. Ich verbinde den Namen mit James Lipton<\/a> und The Actors Studio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Zur\u00fcck in Manhatten gehe ich zum Foley Square. Hier sind die verschiedenen Gerichte von New York. Ich suche ein spezielles: Die Au\u00dfenansicht des Night Court<\/a>.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Im realen Leben ist es nicht das Municipal Courtes, sondern es ist die Front des New York County Supreme Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Einen H\u00e4userblock sp\u00e4ter bin ich zur\u00fcck am Broadway. Es geht zur\u00fcck nach Tribeca, denn gestern habe ich das Ghostbuster HQ <\/a>ausgelassen, vergessen, was auch immer. Ich wusste nicht, dass es eine aktive Feuerwehrwache ist; die Heimat von Hook & Ladder 8. Und die Feuerwehrleute verstehen es, ihr ber\u00fchmtes Haus in bare M\u00fcnze zu verwandeln. Merchandise. Da wundert es nicht, dass die Ladder das (zus\u00e4tzliche) Nummerschild ECTO-1 hat.<\/p>\n

Und wieder zur\u00fcck auf die Ostseite des Broadway. Ich durchquere Chinatown<\/a> (kein Vergleich zu Yokohama, nicht mal ansatzweise) und Little Italy<\/a> (n\u00e4chsten Mal muss ich hier f\u00fcr eine Mittagspause stoppen) in Richtung Lower East Side<\/a>. In der Ochard Street ist der Pawn Shop aus Men in Black<\/a>. Die Gegend hat ihren eigenen Charme, ist aber nicht mein Ding.<\/p>\n

Zeit f\u00fcr eine Pizza, New York Style. Zum n\u00e4chsten Stopp nehme ich jetzt doch die U-Bahn. Ich muss bereits 10 km auf der Uhr haben. Der M Train<\/a> bringt mich zur 23rd St. Nur ein Block entfernt ist das Flatiron Building<\/a><\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span>, welches leider zum Teil hinter ein Ger\u00fcst versteckt ist.<\/p>\n

Aber ich entdecke einen T-Mobile-Shop. Meine google-Navigation vom JFK Airport zum Hotel hat mich knapp knapp 30\u20ac Roaming gekostet hat. Ich brauche eine US-SIM-Card. Schnell lerne ich, dass US-SIM-Cards in deutschen Smartphones nicht funktionieren. Also muss ein US-Phone her. Da ich definitiv einen Prepaid-Vertrag will, den ich in einem Jahr auslaufen lassen kann, ist die Wahl stark eingeschr\u00e4nkt. Ich entscheide mich f\u00fcr ein Motorola. Das bekomme ich gratis, wenn ich zwei Monate im Voraus bezahle. Deal.<\/p>\n

Nachdem ich die Telefonnummer sehe, \u00fcberlege ich sofort, ob ich den Vertrag in Deutschland aktiv halte. US-Smartphones habe keine eigene Vorwahl, sondern nehmen die der Stadt, wo der Vertrag geschlossen wird. Ich habe eine New Yorker Telefonnummer, die 646 beginnt. GEIL.<\/p>\n

Weiter zur Subway Line 4<\/a>. Ich muss Strecke machen. N\u00e4chster Stopp ist Grand Central Station<\/a> (very Grand and very central). Das Ding kommt in so vielen Filmen vor,\u00a0 dass ich definitiv ein Foto brauche. Um eine Szene aus MiB zu fotografieren, schleiche ich mich schnell auf die Park Ave Viaduct. Ich bin Tourist. Ich darf das. Unten auf der 42nd St mache ich meinen ersten Kontakt mit US Streetfood: Hot Dog, New York Style<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. Der Verkaufsstand ist eine Mischung aus einem Yatai-Stand und diesen Trolleys im Flugzeug. New York Style Hot Dogs sind komplett anders aber lecker.<\/p>\n

Von hier geht es zu Fu\u00df weiter entlang der ber\u00fchmten 5th Avenue<\/a> zum Central Park<\/a>, der an der 59th St beginnt. Unterwegs passiere ich einige Highlights: Rockefeller Center<\/a>, St.Patrick’s Cathedral<\/a> (sie wirkt wie ein Fremdk\u00f6rper zwischen den Hochh\u00e4usern), St.Thomas Church und nat\u00fcrlich Trump Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Am Central Park entlag gehe ich r\u00fcber zur 8th Ave, wo das Geb\u00e4ude aus Ghostbuster (Kampf gegen Gozer und den Marshmallow Man) steht. Wow. Wenn das hier die kurze Seite des Central Parks ist, dann ist das Ding riesig. Nach einem Foto vom Columbus Circle<\/a>, biege ich in den Central Park ab. Das Geb\u00e4ude, das ich suche, steht nahe der 66th St. Alle Geb\u00e4ude hier sind Art-Deco<\/a> und sehen extrem cool aus.<\/p>\n

Die D\u00e4mmerung ist nicht mehr weit weg, aber ein Ort ist noch auf meiner Liste: das Guggenheim Museum auf der Ostseite des Central Park. Und so wandere ich quer durch diesen riesigen Central Park. Das Foto ist im Kasten und jetzt ist es auch egal. Ich wandere hoch bis zur 110th Street und mache ein paar Fotos \u00fcber den Teich von der Skyline von Manhattan. In Momenten wie diesen h\u00e4tte ich gerne ein Stativ dabei.<\/p>\n

Hmmm, nur 15 Stra\u00dfen n\u00f6rdlich ist Harlem<\/a> und das Apollo-Theater<\/a>.\u00a0 So viel Polizei. Ich frage nach, ob es eine gute Idee ist, hier zu sein. Ja, ist es. Heute ist Drake im Apollo. Keine Ahnung wer Drake ist, aber bevor das hier losgeht, will ich weg sein. Auf zur U-Bahnstation 125th & Manhattan. Ich nehme den A-Train<\/a> !!!<\/p>\n

Der A-Train w\u00fcrde mich von der 125.ten runter bis zur Fulton Street bringen (das ist rechnerisch … Moment … -20th St). W\u00e4herend der Fahrt f\u00e4llt mir auf, dass wir Christopher St passieren, die Christopher Street<\/a>. Einen Stopp kann der Tag noch vertragen. Au\u00dferdem ist es Zeit f\u00fcr ein Bier.<\/p>\n

Vom Haltepunkt 4th St Wash sind es nur ein paar Meter zum Stonewall Park<\/a>. Hier ist das Stonewall Inn<\/a>, wo der Christopher Street Day<\/a> seinen Ursprung hat. Und mit Trump und der AfD am Horizont k\u00f6nnte bald wieder die Zeit kommen, wo Gewalt gegen queere Menschen normal und der CSD wieder zur Mahnung wird, die Teilnahme gef\u00e4hrlich ist.<\/p>\n

Das Bier genie\u00dfe ich in Ty’s Bar<\/a>. Und dann ist dieser zweite Tag nun wirklich vorbei. Ich bin platt. Meine Energie reicht gerade noch f\u00fcr die R\u00fcckfahrt zum Hotel. Meine Schrittz\u00e4hler-App hat \u00fcber 34’000 Schritte gemessen.<\/p>\n

Der heutige Tag stand wirklich im Zeichen von „Das kenne ich aus Film und Fernsehen“. Ich kann es nicht beschreiben. Es war ein merkw\u00fcrdiges Gef\u00fchl an all diesen Orten zu sein. Man kennt sie, irgendwie, obwohl nie zuvor hier war. Und zugleich kennt man sie nicht, da es oft ein Blick in eine 40 Jahre alte Vergangenheit ist, die man im Kopf hat. Ich kann aber jedem, der nach New York fliegt, raten, diese Film-und-Fernsehn-Brille aufzusetzen. Der Blick auf die Stadt ist komplett anders, als wenn man dem Reisef\u00fcherer folgt. Ich w\u00fcrde aber jedem raten, eine andere Aufteilung der beiden Tage zu w\u00e4hlen.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yesterday I was primarily out and about on the Hudson side of Manhattan. Today I’m starting with the East River<\/a>. From the hotel (Water Street) I head down to FDR Drive<\/a><\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. From Pier 17, I take a few photos of the Brooklyn Bridge<\/a><\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

To get onto the bridge, I have to go back to almost the middle of the top of Mahattan. I find a stairway to the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade. This is the pedestrian walkway in the middle of the bridge, between the lanes. Once across to Brooklyn and back takes time. I walk past Pace University<\/a>. I associate the name with James Lipton<\/a> and The Actors Studio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Back in Manhattan, I go straight to Foley Square. Here are the various courts of New York. I’m looking for one in particular: the outside view of Night Court<\/a>.<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> In real life, it’s not the Municipal Court<\/a>, but the front of the New York County Supreme Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One block later, I’m back on Broadway. It’s back to Tribeca, because yesterday I skipped Ghostbuster HQ<\/a>, forgot, whatever. I didn’t know it was an active fire station; the home of Hook & Ladder 8. And the firefighters know how to turn their famous house into cash. Merchandise. So it’s no surprise that the ladder has the (additional) number plate ECTO-1.<\/p>\n

And back to the east side of Broadway. I cross Chinatown<\/a> (no comparison to Yokohama, not even close) and Little Italy<\/a> (next time I need to stop here for Lunch) towards the Lower East Side<\/a>. The Pawn Shop from Men in Black<\/a> is on Ochard Street. The area has its own charm, but it’s not my thing.<\/p>\n

Time for a pizza, New York style. I take the subway to my next stop after all. I must already have 10 km on the clock. The M Train<\/a> takes me to 23rd St., just one block away is the Flatiron Building<\/a><\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span>, which is unfortunately partially hidden behind scaffolding.<\/p>\n

But I discover a T-Mobile store. My google navigation from JFK Airport to the hotel cost me just under $35 roaming. I need a US SIM card. I quickly learn that US SIM cards don’t work in German smartphones. So I need a US phone. Since I definitely want a prepaid contract that I can let expire in a year, the choice is very limited. I decide on a Motorola. I get it for free if I pay two months in advance. Deal.<\/p>\n

When I see the phone number, I immediately think about whether I should keep the contract active in Germany. US smartphones don’t have their own area code, but use that of the city where the contract is concluded. I have a New York phone number that starts with 646. AWESOME.<\/p>\n

On to Subway Line 4<\/a>, I have to make some distance. Next stop is Grand Central Station<\/a> (very Grand and very Central). This thing appears in so many movies that I definitely need a photo. I quickly sneak onto the Park Ave Viaduct to photograph a scene from MiB. I’m a tourist. I’m allowed to do that. Down on 42nd St, I make my first contact with US street food: hot dogs, New York style<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. The stall is a cross between a Yatai stand and those trolleys on an airplane. New York style hot dogs are completely different but delicious.<\/p>\n

From here, I continue on foot along the famous 5th Avenue<\/a> to Central Park<\/a>, which begins at 59th St. I pass a few highlights on the way: Rockefeller Center<\/a>, St. Patrick’s Cathedral<\/a> (it looks like a foreign body among the skyscrapers), Saint Thomas Church<\/a> and, of course, Trump Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Along Central Park, I walk over to 8th Ave, where the building from Ghostbuster (fight against Gozer and the Marshmallow Man) is located. Wow. If this is the short side of Central Park, then this thing is huge. After a photo of Columbus Circle<\/a>, I turn into Central Park. The building I’m looking for is near 66th St. All the buildings here are art deco<\/a> and look extremely cool.<\/p>\n

Dusk is not far away, but there is still one place on my list: the Guggenheim Museum on the east side of Central Park. And so I wander across this huge Central Park. The photo is in the can and now it doesn’t matter. I walk up to 110th Street and take a few photos across the pond of the Manhattan skyline. At moments like this, I wish I had a tripod with me.<\/p>\n

Hmmm, just 15 streets north is Harlem<\/a> and the Apollo Theater<\/a>. So many police. I ask if it’s a good idea to be here. Yes, it is. Today Drake is at the Apollo. No idea who Drake is, but before this starts, I want to be out of here. Off to the 125th & Manhattan subway station. I’m taking the A-Train<\/a>!!!<\/p>\n

The A-Train would take me from 125th down to Fulton Street (that’s mathematically … wait for it … -20th St). During the ride I notice that we are passing thee Christopher Street<\/a>. The day could do with another stop.It’s also time for a beer.<\/p>\n

From the 4th St Wash stop, it is only a few meters to Stonewall Park<\/a>. Here is the Stonewall Inn<\/a>, where Christopher Street Day<\/a> originated. And with Trump and the AfD on the horizon, the time could soon come again when violence against queer people becomes normal and CSD once again becomes a reminder that participation is dangerous.<\/p>\n

I enjoy the beer in Ty’s Bar<\/a>. And then this second day is really over. I’m exhausted. I have just enough energy for the drive back to the hotel. My pedometer app has measured over 34’000 steps.<\/p>\n

Today was really all about \u201cI know this from movies and TV\u201d. I can’t describe it. It was a strange feeling to be in all these places. You know them, somehow, even though you’ve never been here before. And at the same time you don’t know them, because it’s often a glimpse into a 40-year-old past that you have in your head. But I can advise anyone who flies to New York to put on those movie-and-TV glasses. The view of the city is completely different from following the tour guide. However, I would advise everyone to choose a different division of the two days.<\/em><\/p>\n
