Heute geht es zu einem Baseballspiel. Die San Francisco Gaints<\/a> spielen die New York Mets<\/a>. East Coast gegen West Coast. Dieses Mal fahre ich mit ein paar deutschen Arbeitskollegen von der NPS.<\/p>\n

Wir sind relativ fr\u00fch in San Francisco und parken den Wagen irgnedwo in der N\u00e4he von Pier 50, etwas halbe Strecke zwischen Oracle Park<\/a>, wo das Baseballspiel heute Abend stattfindet und dem Chase Center<\/a>, wo die Golden State Warriors<\/a> heute Basketball spielen. Wir haben knapp 6 Stunden bis Spiel beginnt. F\u00fcr einen kurzen Rundgang durch San Francisco sollte das reichen.<\/p>\n

Der Rundgang f\u00e4ngt damit an, dass wir am Mission Creek Park falsch abbiegen. Aber gut, hat man den auch mal gesehen. Die Wohngegend sieht hochpreisig und neu aus. Hier wurde offenbar ein altes Hafen- und Industriegebiet zu teuren Wohnquartieren umfunktioniert. Kennt man ja aus deutschen Gro\u00dfst\u00e4dten.<\/p>\n

\u00dcber die Klappbr\u00fccke an der 4th Street geht geradeaus in Richtung Market Street. Hier ist auch der Hauptbahnhof der Caltrain<\/a>. Die Strecke zieht sich. Wir gehen unter der I-80 hindurch. Das hier hat nun nichts mehr mit der teueren Wohngegend von eben zu tun. Vorbei am Yerba Buena<\/a> Geb\u00e4udekomplex. Keine Ahnung was es ist, aber ein Architekt hat sich hier ausgetobt.<\/p>\n

Die 4th St f\u00fchrt direkt zum Union Square<\/a> mit all den Touristen, die auf eine Fahrt mit der Cable Car<\/a> warten. Wir steuern das Ferry Building<\/a> an. Der Springbrunnen (Vaillancourt Fountain<\/a>) am Embarcadero Plaza<\/a> vor dem Geb\u00e4ude geh\u00f6rt definitiv in die Kategorie: Ist das Kunst oder kann das weg. Im Geb\u00e4ude gibt es wie bei einer Kleinmarkthalle viele H\u00e4ndler, die ess- und trinkbares verkaufen; zu Touristenpreisen versteht sich. amerikanische Touristenpreise.<\/p>\n

Auf meine Empfehlung hin gehen wir von hier aus zum Coit Tower<\/a>. Ich will die Greenwich Steps vom letzten Mal nehmen. Keine Ahnung ob, das eine gute Idee war. Der Telegraph Hill<\/a>, auf dem der Tower steht sieht von dieser Seite echt hoch aus.<\/p>\n

Knapp 400 Stufen sp\u00e4ter stehen wir am Tower und lernen: Der Aufzug ist kaputt. Es folgen \u00fcber 300 weitere Stufen. Ich Workout f\u00fcr heute ist erledigt. Belohnt werden wir durch die Aussicht bei Sonnenschein: Alcatraz<\/a>, Pier 39<\/a>, Golden Gate Bridge<\/a>, Office District. Dieses Mal zoome ich auch in die Lombard Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unser Weg zur\u00fcck f\u00fchrt die Filbert Street hinunter zum Washington Square<\/a> und dann nach China Town<\/a>. An der California St machen wir einen Abstecher hinauf zur Hyde St; als ob wir schon genung bergauf gegangen sind<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Wir \u00fcberlegen kurz, ob wir eine Cable Car nehmen. Aber da keiner von uns eine Karte gekauft hat und wir nur ein paar Stationen fahren w\u00fcrden, verschieben wir das auf einen anderen Besuch in San Francisco. Mit Blick auf die Uhr begeben wir uns zur\u00fcck zum Stadion. Dieses Mal nehmen wir 3rd St, die direkt am Stadion endet, aber nichts bietet, das man hier erw\u00e4hnen k\u00f6nnte.<\/p>\n

Baseball<\/h5>\n

Wir stehen vor dem Stadion, an der Willie Mays Statue<\/a><\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. Karten haben wir noch nicht. Unser Plan war, spontan zu kaufen, was verf\u00fcgbar ist. Womit ich nicht gerechnet habe, ist der Preis: $150. Wow. Es gibt billigere Karten irgendwo am Ende vom Spielfeld oder mit Blick gegen die Sonne.<\/p>\n

Der Zugang vom Stadion ist besser gesichert als der einer Flughafenlounge. Es sind keine Taschen, Rucks\u00e4cke und Beutel erlaubt. (Gut, dass ich meine Kamera vorher im Auto versteckt habe). Metalldetektoren. Bewaffnetes Sicherheitspersonal. Selbst die Bars um das Stadion herum haben Metalldetektoren vor dem Eingang.<\/p>\n

Der Sitzplatz ist aber super. Wir sitzen direkt hinter der ESPN<\/a>-Kamera im 2. Rang. Die stellen die Kamera nicht an einen bl\u00f6den Standort. Und wir haben den Vorteil, dass wir die Bildschirme sehen. Wir haben das Spiel, einen Zoom auf die Spieler und daneben das ESPN-Fernsehsignal. Mehr geht nicht.<\/p>\n

Nach dem Spiel holen wir uns noch Hotdogs au\u00dferhalb vom Stadion, bei diesen kleinen (sicherlich halblegalen) Food-Carts. Ich mag die Kombination: HotDog in Speck, Paprika und Zwiebeln. Nur der Preis von $10 ist happig.<\/p>\n

Die R\u00fcckfahrt sehr sp\u00e4t am Abend ist ohne besondere Vorkommnisse. Ich habe mir nicht einmal gemerkt, wie das Spiel ausgegangen ist. Ich bin aber ehrlich: Baseball in Japan ist besser. Zum einen ist das Stadion keine Hochsicherheitszone. Zum anderen ist es sauberer. Den Dreck, den die Fans im Stadion hinterlassen, das hat wahrlich amerikanische Dimensionen.<\/p>\n

Today we’re going to a baseball game. The San Francisco Gaints<\/a> play the New York Mets<\/a>. East Coast versus West Coast. This time I’m going with a couple of German colleagues from the NPS.<\/p>\n

We arrive relatively early in San Francisco and park the car somewhere near Pier 50, about halfway between Oracle Park<\/a>, where the baseball game is taking place tonight, and the Chase Center<\/a>, where the Golden State Warriors<\/a> are playing basketball today. We have just under 6 hours until the game starts. That should be enough time for a quick tour of San Francisco.<\/p>\n

The tour starts with us taking a wrong turn at Mission Creek Park. But well, we’ve seen it before. The residential area looks expensive and new. An old harbor and industrial area has apparently been converted into expensive residential quarters. We’ve seen this before in major German cities.<\/p>\n

Cross the bascule bridge on 4th Street and head straight towards Market Street. This is also the main Caltrain<\/a> station. The route is long. We pass under I-80. This no longer has anything to do with the expensive residential area we just passed. We pass the Yerba Buena building complex. I don’t know what it is, but an architect has let off steam here.<\/p>\n

4th St leads directly to Union Square<\/a> with all the tourists waiting for a ride on the cable car<\/a>. We head for the Ferry Building<\/a>. The fountain (Vaillancourt Fountain<\/a>) on Embarcadero Plaza<\/a> in front of the building definitely belongs in the category: is this art or can it go? Inside the building, there are many vendors selling food and drink at tourist prices, of course. American tourist prices.<\/p>\n

On my recommendation, we walk from here to Coit Tower<\/a>. I want to take the Greenwich Steps from last time. I don’t know if that was a good idea. Telegraph Hill<\/a>, on which the tower stands, looks really high from this side.<\/p>\n

Almost 400 steps later, we arrive at the tower and learn that the elevator is broken. Over 300 more steps follow. My workout for today is done. We are rewarded by the view in the sunshine: Alcatraz<\/a>, Pier 39<\/a>, Golden Gate Bridge<\/a>, Office District. This time I also zoom into Lombard Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Our way back leads down Filbert Street to Washington Square<\/a> and then to China Town<\/a>. At California St, we take a detour up to Hyde St; as if we’ve already walked uphill enough<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

We briefly consider taking a cable car. But as neither of us has bought a ticket and we would only be traveling a few stops, we postpone this to another visit to San Francisco. Looking at the clock, we head back to the stadium. This time we take 3rd St, which ends right at the stadium, but offers nothing worth mentioning here.<\/p>\n

We are standing in front of the stadium, at the Willie Mays statue<\/a><\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. We don’t have tickets yet. Our plan was to spontaneously buy what’s available. What I didn’t count on was the price: $150. wow. There are cheaper tickets somewhere at the end of the field or facing the sun.<\/p>\n

Access from the stadium is better secured than an airport lounge. No bags, backpacks or pouches are allowed. (Good thing I hid my camera in the car beforehand). Metal detectors. Armed security personnel. Even the bars around the stadium have metal detectors at the entrance.<\/p>\n

But the seat is great. We sit directly behind the ESPN<\/a> camera in the 2nd tier. They don’t put the camera in a stupid position. And we have the advantage of being able to see the screens. We have the game, a zoom on the players and the ESPN TV signal next to it. That’s as good as it gets.<\/p>\n

After the game, we get hot dogs outside the stadium, at these little (surely semi-legal) food carts. I like the combination: hot dog with bacon, peppers and onions. Only the price of $10 is steep.<\/p>\n

The return trip very late in the evening is uneventful. I didn’t even remember how the game ended. But I’ll be honest: baseball in Japan is better. For one thing, the stadium is not a high-security zone. For another, it’s cleaner. The dirt that the fans leave behind in the stadium is truly on an American scale.<\/p>\n
