F\u00fcr April dieses Wochenende steht Los Angeles<\/a> und speziell die Golden State Fur Con<\/em><\/a> auf der Liste. Es war ein dummer Zufall, dass am Donnerstag (meinem Reisetag) Steel Panther<\/a> ein Konzert in West Hollywood<\/a> gibt. Da auch WinterOwl zur GSFC will, fahren wir gemeinsam.<\/p>\n

Wir verlassen Monterey auf der 68 in Richtung Salinas. Bis hier kenne ich den Weg. Weiter geht es auf der 101; nicht in Richtung SF, sondern in Richtung LA. Theoretisch k\u00f6nnen wir bis LA auf der 101 bleiben. Aber das w\u00e4re ein riesiger Umweg. Bei El Paso de Robles<\/em> wechseln wir auf die 46. Sie verbindet sich kurz mit 41, bevor sie weiter zur I-5 f\u00fchrt. Der Abzweig der 41 von der 46 ist James Dean Junction<\/em>. Hier starb James Dean am 30.09.1955 bei einem Verkehrsunfall mit seinem Porsche.<\/p>\n

Aber so weit kommen wir nicht. Bei Shandon stehen wir im Stau. Und der wird auf googleMaps immer l\u00e4nger. Zeitverlust ist jetzt schon knapp eine Stunde.\u00a0 Hier geht nichts mehr. Die Wartezeit auf googleMaps wird immer l\u00e4nger. Wir starten Plan B und fahren „\u00fcber Land“.<\/p>\n

San Juan Rd und dann ein sehr kleine Stra\u00dfe r\u00fcber zur Bitterwater Rd. Die Stra\u00dfe in real ist genauso klein wie auf googleMaps.Wir kommen nicht schnell voran aber die Landschaft ist einmalig. Nach den Tagen und Wochen mit Regen ist hier alles dezent am bl\u00fchen: gelb. orange. ein wenig violett. Wir kommen nicht schnell voran, aber wir kommen voran.<\/p>\n

Bitterwater Rd<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> und Bitterwater Valley Rd sind dann wieder richtige Stra\u00dfen. Wir machen gut Strecke. Bald sind wir auf der 46 und kurze Zeit sp\u00e4ter auf der I-5. Es geht durchs Central Valley<\/a>. Bei Gorman geht es\u00a0 am Ende des Central Valley durch die Berge.Der Pass ist auf etwa 4500 ft (1370 m). Es dauert bis wir wieder flaches Land erreichen: San Fernando Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Es ist schon spannend, dass ich diese Orte auf den Stra\u00dfenschildern lese: Los Angeles, Glendale, Hollywood. Das kenne ich alles nur aus Filmen. Auch der Vekehr ist wie im Film, trotz 5 Spuren pro Richtung. Wow. Ich bin in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

WinterOwl kennt sich hier aus und navigiert uns durch das Chaos von Stra\u00dfen zuverl\u00e4ssig zum Sunset Blvd. Wow. Ich bin in Hollywood. Hollywood!<\/p>\n

Das Konzert findet im Whisky A Go Go<\/a> statt. Ein kleiner Club. Ich habe VIP-Karten, die ein Meet and Greet beinhalten.<\/p>\n

Wer oder was das Whisky a Go Go ist, muss ich auf wikipedia nachlesen. Allein schon, dass der Club einen wiki-Eintrag hat, sagt schon einiges: Eist eine feste Gr\u00f6\u00dfe auf dem Sunset Blvd. Gegr\u00fcndet 1964 haben hier die Gr\u00f6\u00dfen von Rock und Metal Konzerte gegeben: The Doors, Alice Cooper, System of a Down, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, AC\/DC, Linkin Park, Guns N‘ Roses, van Halen. Und auch die Beach Boys und Elton John waren hier. Das Ding ist eine Institution.<\/p>\n

Zusammen mit Steel Panther treten noch zwei weitere Bands im Vorprogramm auf. Eine davon spielt Songs von den BeeGees, aber als Metalversion. Die Band hei\u00dft Tragedy. Deren aktuell LP hei\u00dft „Disco Balls to the Walls“. Cool.<\/p>\n

Nach dem Konzert ging es noch kurz in die Rainbow Bar & Grill<\/strong><\/a>. Eine Bar 200m die Stra\u00dfe runter. Auch diesen Ort ist eine Br\u00fchmtheit. Die Er\u00f6ffnungsfeier in 1962 war die Geburtstagsparty von Elton John. Joe DiMaggio und Marilyn Monroe hatten hier ein Blind Date. Andere G\u00e4ste waren Elvis Presley, Alice Copper, Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond oder Johnny Cash. Lemmy Kilmister<\/a> von Mot\u00f6rhead war Stammgast. Hier fand auch die Trauerfeier statt.<\/p>\n

Ich bin noch nicht einmal im Hotel und habe schon zwei ber\u00fchmte Orte in Hollywood besucht; und das ohne es geplant zu haben. Und die Stra\u00dfen von Beverly Hills sind nur eine Stra\u00dfenkreuzung.<\/p>\n

WinterOwl holt mich kurz vor Mitternacht ab und wir fahren zum Hilton Hotel am LAX. Ich begreife so langsam wie gro\u00df LA ist. Der Flughafen ist auf der Karte nur ein kleines St\u00fcck s\u00fcdlich von uns. Und trotzdem brauchen wir fast 30 Minuten.<\/p>\n

Ich wei\u00df nicht, ob ich ein Fan von Vallet Parking bin. Die Parkgeb\u00fchren sind der Wahnsinn ($40\/Nacht) und man kann nicht mal eben was aus dem Wagen holen. Egal. Der Tag war ein voller Erfolg. Und morgen startet die FurCon.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles<\/a> and specifically the Golden State Fur Con<\/em><\/a> is on the list for April this weekend. It was a silly coincidence that on Thursday (my day of travel) Steel Panther<\/a> is playing a concert in West Hollywood<\/a>. Since WinterOwl also wants to go to GSFC, we’re going together.<\/p>\n

We leave Monterey on the 68 towards Salinas. I know the way up to here. We continue on the 101; not in the direction of SF, but in the direction of LA. Theoretically, we could stay on the 101 until LA. But that would be a huge detour. At El Paso de Robles we change to 46, which connects briefly with 41 before continuing on to I-5. The junction of 41 and 46 is James Dean Junction. This is where James Dean died in a traffic accident with his Porsche on September 30, 1955.<\/p>\n

But we don’t get that far. We get stuck in a traffic jam at Shandon. And it’s getting longer and longer on googleMaps. We’ve already lost almost an hour. Nothing works here. The waiting time on googleMaps is getting longer and longer. We start plan B and drive \u201coverland\u201d.<\/p>\n

San Juan Rd and then a very small road over to Bitterwater Rd. The road in real life is just as small as on googleMaps and we don’t make much progress, but the landscape is unique. After days and weeks of rain, everything here is subtly in bloom: yellow, orange, a little purple. We are not making fast progress, but we are making progress.<\/p>\n

Bitterwater Rd<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and Bitterwater Valley Rd will be real roads again. We make good time. Soon we are on 46 and a short time later on I-5, traveling through the Central Valley<\/a>. At Gorman, at the end of the Central Valley, we pass through the mountains at about 4500 ft (1370 m). It takes a while until we reach flat land again: San Fernando Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s exciting that I read these places on the street signs: Los Angeles, Glendale, Hollywood. I only know all this from movies. Even the traffic is like in the movies, despite 5 lanes in each direction. Wow. I’m in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

WinterOwl knows its way around here and reliably navigates us through the chaos of streets to Sunset Blvd. Wow. I’m in Hollywood. Hollywood!<\/p>\n

The concert will take place at Whisky A Go Go. A small club. I have VIP tickets that include a meet and greet.<\/p>\n

I’ll have to look up who or what Whisky a Go Go<\/a> is on wikipedia. The fact that the club has a wiki entry alone says a lot: it’s a fixture on Sunset Blvd. Founded in 1964, the greats of rock and metal have given concerts here: The Doors, Alice Cooper, System of a Down, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, AC\/DC, Linkin Park, Guns N‘ Roses, Van Halen. The Beach Boys and Elton John have also been here. This thing is an institution.<\/p>\n

Together with Steel Panther, two other bands perform as support acts. One of them plays songs by the BeeGees, but as a metal version. The band is called Tragedy. Their current LP is called \u201cDisco Balls to the Walls\u201d. Cool.<\/p>\n

After the concert, we went to the Rainbow Bar & Grill<\/a>. A bar 200m down the street. This place is also a celebrity. The opening party in 1962 was Elton John’s birthday party. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe had a blind date here. Other guests included Elvis Presley, Alice Copper, Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. Lemmy Kilmister<\/a> from Mot\u00f6rhead was a regular guest. The funeral service was also held here.<\/p>\n

I’m not even in the hotel yet and I’ve already visited two famous places in Hollywood without having planned it. And the streets of Beverly Hills are just a crossroads.<\/p>\n

WinterOwl picks me up just before midnight and we drive to the Hilton Hotel at LAX. I’m beginning to realize just how big LA is. The airport is only a short distance south of us on the map. And yet it takes us almost 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

I don’t know if I’m a fan of Vallet Parking. The parking fees are insane ($40\/night) and you can’t just grab something out of the car. No matter. The day was a complete success. And tomorrow FurCon starts.<\/p>\n
